An Austrian millionaire is looking to divide up a 25 million euro (about 670 billion VND) inheritance from her grandmother Traudl Engelhorn-Vechiatto and she has come up with a unique solution.
Marlene Engelhorn, 31, from Vienna, is the granddaughter of Friedrich Engelhorn, founder of Germany's leading chemical and pharmaceutical company, BASF. When her grandmother passed away in September 2022, Engelhorn inherited a huge amount of money. With this inheritance of several hundred billion, she could easily enjoy a life of luxury without having to worry about anything.
However, Marlene Engelhorn caused a stir shortly after inheriting the inheritance. The Gen Y rich kid went to the press and announced that she felt it was unfair and unworthy that people who have never worked or contributed to society could own such a large amount of money.
Marlene Engelhorn's family was a long-standing aristocrat in Europe.
Born into the richest and most powerful family in Austria, Marlene Engelhorn attended the best schools possible and lived the dream life of many. She lived in luxury and only knew how “normal people” lived after growing up and going out into society. Not only did she simply pass up a huge inheritance of tens, even hundreds of millions of euros, Marlene Engelhorn also founded an organization to encourage other rich kids around the world to give up their inheritance like her.
To set an example, she decided to give away all her inheritance and considered this an act to reduce the gap between rich and poor in society.
“I inherited a fortune and therefore have power without having to do anything to get it,” she said. “And the government doesn’t even want to tax this money. I know there are people out there who struggle every day just to put food on the table.”
Recently, the heir decided to redistribute his assets by calling on everyone to come and inherit. You just need to meet 2 conditions: be an Austrian citizen and be able to come up with a reasonable spending idea.
The millionaire will divide her assets among 50 strangers.
Marlene's campaign has certainly attracted a lot of attention. In January, more than 10,000 strangers applied to become heirs to the rich kid. She plans to select 50 of them and hear their views on how to use their inheritance in private meetings held on weekends.
Those selected will receive 1,200 euros (about 32 million VND) for each weekend they attend. Childcare and interpreter services will also be provided for those who need them.
Marlene Engelhorn believes the discussions are intended to "serve democracy".
“I don’t have veto power,” she said. “I’m putting my assets in the hands of these 50 people and putting my trust in them.”
