VietnamWorks has statistics based on the survey analysis results of more than 1,000 workers and 500 enterprises in the manufacturing sector in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Bac Ninh, Thai Nguyen, Long An ...

Business revenue declines

Accordingly, 9 industries in the manufacturing sector were surveyed, including industrial products, consumer goods/food production, textiles/footwear, construction materials production, high technology, agriculture and forestry, automation/automobiles, pharmaceuticals/biotechnology.

The electronics manufacturing industry is generally affected by the economic recession.

Ms. Tran Thi Hoan, Deputy Director of Navigos Search North, commented: "Through the report, businesses in 9 key manufacturing sectors have all recorded impacts, clearly shown through the decline in revenue. At least 50% of businesses face a decline in revenue in each sector, of which the most affected sector is up to 91% of businesses. More than 50% of businesses in each sector have a decline from less than 10% to over 40% of total revenue."

According to Ms. Hoan, when faced with this difficulty, most manufacturing enterprises choose to maintain or reduce their scale. For example, in the high-tech industry, 56% of enterprises have cut labor, while 52% of enterprises in the textile, garment and footwear industries have cut working hours. Many enterprises producing consumer goods/food and construction materials have both cut labor and reduced working hours.

As a result, up to 58% of manufacturing workers have seen their salaries cut by 30-50%. Many workers have had their working hours and overtime reduced and have not received their usual benefits.

To be recruited must improve skills

According to the survey, to cope with the difficult situation, 60% of workers chose to cut living expenses, 37% worked extra jobs outside.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Chung, Deputy General Director of Termo Vietnam Co., Ltd., also acknowledged: "It can be seen that the manufacturing market tends to decrease along with the general decline of the economy. In the first 7 months of the year, the electronics, computer, and component manufacturing industry only reached 30.7 billion USD, down 3% compared to the same period last year, and the phone component industry only reached 27.8 billion USD, down 18%".

Automation/automotive was also one of the surveyed industries that saw a decline in revenue.

According to Mr. Chung, the major annual recruitment period of manufacturing industries usually falls in the last 6 months of the year. However, in predicting the recruitment situation this year, Mr. Chung said that the last months of the year will be even more difficult as the economic situation becomes increasingly severe.

"To keep their jobs, or be recruited, workers must choose to improve their skills and expertise to maintain a competitive advantage. These include management skills, financial management skills, and skills in using technology in production," Ms. Tran Thi Hoan shared.

In addition, according to Ms. Hoan, workers as well as new graduates or students about to graduate need to update their knowledge and skills to adapt to automation. At the same time, they need to learn more necessary skills such as effective communication, technology and engineering, time management, etc.
