Room rates increase

As school admission is approaching, the demand for accommodation among new students in Da Nang is increasing sharply.

Tran Thi Minh Hanh (from Nghe An ), a freshman at the University of Technical Education (University of Danang) and her mother wandered around the city looking for a place to live.

Although she has looked at many rooms, Hanh still hasn’t found a suitable place. The rooms with the lowest rent start from 2 million VND and up, but most of them are small and lack amenities.

“I want to find a cool room with air conditioning, a refrigerator, and a high place, but after many days of searching, I still haven’t found one. With a price of 2 million VND or more, I will have to share a room to reduce costs,” Hanh said.

Not only facing rising prices, Ms. Tran Thi Thu Ha (a parent from Quang Tri ) worriedly said: “We have been in Da Nang for nearly a week looking for a place to stay for our son. Although we have visited many places, all the rooms we liked were already rented. I feel very worried because the school start date is near but the accommodation is still not stable.”

Mr. Nguyen Van Khanh (Hoa Khanh Ward) said that he had just completed the renovation and upgrading of his family's 3 rented rooms. Although he had just posted the information on social media, after only one day, all the rooms had been booked.

“The boarding house is located near the university area, has a spacious area, has tables, chairs, wardrobes, and rents from 2-4 million VND/month, depending on whether the room has air conditioning or not,” Mr. Khanh shared.

Similarly, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Nhung (Hai Chau Ward) currently has 7 rooms for rent. According to her, in the past week or so, the number of people coming to see the rooms has tripled compared to before. The price ranges from 2-3 million VND/month, not including electricity, water and other services.

“The main contacts are new students and their parents. This year, customers quickly closed the deal and paid deposits because they were worried about running out of rooms. Some people even called to reserve a spot in July,” said Ms. Nhung.

According to records, fully furnished rooms are usually newly built houses or renovated motels and hotels. The room area is about 30m2 or more, equipped with beds, mattresses, wardrobes, refrigerators, kitchens, air conditioners, washing machines, water heaters, etc.

High-rise buildings with elevators also require tenants to pay an additional monthly maintenance fee. The price for these types of rooms is usually from 4 million VND/month or more.

Student Support

Mr. Truong Trung Phuong, Head of Student Management - Library, University of Education (University of Danang) said that before the admission time, the school sent volunteers to survey the boarding area, rooms, rental prices and posted information on the school's channels for students to refer to and choose.

At the same time, the school's dormitory was repaired and added more than 300 new accommodations with full amenities (air conditioners, water heaters, etc.); the school coordinated with the Western Dormitory Management Board to grasp the number and arrange more than 300 additional accommodations for registered students.

The West dormitory currently has 728 rooms with 2,600 students; the East dormitory has 418 rooms with 2,000 students staying.

The leader of the Danang Housing Management and Exploitation Center added that recently, the unit has coordinated with universities and colleges to widely promote and advertise, and at the same time arrange accommodation in order of priority: children of policy families, poor and near-poor households, students from remote areas, out-of-province areas, excellent students and new students.

In the coming time, the unit will continue to focus on dormitory management and operation, ensuring security and order, fire prevention and fighting, in order to create a safe and convenient learning and living environment for students; at the same time, build a clean and comfortable living environment, gradually forming a civilized and modern space.
