Tan Son Nhat pilots flights to and from the new terminal

According to plan, from 4am on April 24, the first flights from Tan Son Nhat to Van Don operated by Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet will be tested at terminal T3.

Next, on April 28, the key flight route Ho Chi Minh City - Hanoi will also participate in the testing phase to verify the actual operational capacity. According to the plan, on April 30, Terminal T3 will be inaugurated, shortening the construction progress by two months.

As of May 5, Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet will officially transfer all domestic flights to Terminal 3. Meanwhile, Bamboo Airways, Pacific Airlines, Vasco and Vietravel Airlines will continue to operate at Terminal 1.

Before operating the new terminal, many aviation businesses were concerned that the separation of terminals T1 and T3 would inevitably lead to confusion among passengers and airlines, especially with joint flights such as Vietnam Airlines, Pacific Airlines and Vasco.

For example, codeshare flights between Vietnam Airlines and Pacific Airlines are both marked with the “VN” symbol, which can lead to confusion about the actual operating airline. This can lead to passengers arriving at the wrong check-in counter or at the wrong flight time.

To minimize confusion, airlines are increasing information to passengers about terminal changes through means of notification such as email, text messages, Zalo, etc. In addition, putting T3 into operation poses a big challenge for external traffic as a large number of passengers will be diverted via new routes leading to this terminal. To support, the 4km long Tran Quoc Hoan - Cong Hoa connecting road project, with a total capital of more than 4,800 billion VND, will be exploited synchronously from the end of April.

Mr. Luong Minh Phuc, Director of the HCM City Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board, said that this route has three connection points with T3, including two underground entrances and an overpass in front of the station. The project has been completed and is awaiting a traffic organization plan for effective connection.

Passengers from different areas will have the following access routes to T3. From Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Thu Duc City: Pham Van Dong - Bach Dang - Truong Son - connecting road Tran Quoc Hoan - Cong Hoa. From the center of Ho Chi Minh City: Nam Ky Khoi Nghia - Nguyen Van Troi - Phan Thuc Duyen - Tran Quoc Hoan - Cong Hoa. From the west and northwest (Binh Tan district and Binh Chanh, Hoc Mon, Cu Chi districts): Cong Hoa or Hoang Hoa Tham - Tran Quoc Hoan - Cong Hoa.

Terminal T3 is separate from T1 and T2, so vehicles will mainly move through two main axes: the Tran Quoc Hoan - Cong Hoa connecting road and the extended Hoang Hoa Tham road, instead of depending on Truong Son road as before.

In addition, Tan Son Nhat Airport is planning to bid for passenger transport services between terminals T1, T2 (international) and T3 to ensure maximum convenience.

With the number of domestic passengers of about 20 million per year, accounting for nearly 80% of the total number of domestic passengers at Tan Son Nhat, the move of the two "giants" Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet to T3 is expected to significantly reduce pressure on T1.

Terminal T1 is only designed to serve 15 million passengers/year, equivalent to 41,000 passengers/day, but often exceeds capacity, especially during holidays with nearly 100,000 passengers/day, double the design capacity.
