The above information was announced by the Military Industry-Telecoms Group (Viettel) on August 26 in the Cyber Security Situation Report for the first half of 2024.
The report provides information on data leaks, security vulnerabilities affecting Vietnamese businesses, ransomware attacks, and distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, compiled by Viettel Cyber Security (VCS).
In the first 6 months of 2024, based on data from the Viettel Threat Intelligence System, many risks of information security loss were recorded.
Specifically, there were a total of 46 data leaks of businesses and organizations in Vietnam. Of these, the most leaked were customer information and sales information of businesses in the retail sector. Next was customer identity verification information through the application of electronic technology (eKYC), information of many universities, educational institutions...
About 17,000 new vulnerabilities appeared in cyberspace, of which more than half were high-level and severe vulnerabilities according to the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS). Of these, 71 vulnerabilities pose a risk to organizations and businesses in Vietnam (including serious vulnerabilities in Ivanti Connect Secure internal network connection solutions and PaloAlto Networks PAN-OS firewall solutions).
From January to June 2024, the amount of data encrypted by attacks reached 3 Terabytes with a total estimated loss of more than 10 million USD. Many attack campaigns targeted targets in many fields such as finance, public services, information technology, and manufacturing. Viettel Threat Intelligence recorded that 56 organizations in these fields were initially attacked by ransomware but had not yet had their data encrypted. In addition, there were about 500,000 distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, an increase of 16% compared to the same period in 2023.
Viettel Cyber Security Company recommends that organizations and businesses review backup systems, ensuring that backup data is physically and logically separated from the main systems. Backup data must be able to recover when the main system encounters serious problems.
Organizations and businesses also need to review, tighten access rights and manage servers and access control systems; add multi-factor authentication mechanisms for key systems and accounts; and regularly update patches for internet-facing applications.
In addition, it is necessary to proactively grasp information about cyber attack cases and trends because early grasp of information plays a strategic role, helping units maintain the initiative in handling and ensuring information security./.
