Mr. Seah Kian Peng, 61 years old, is currently a member of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP), representing the Marine Parade GRC constituency. He joined politics in 2006 and served as Deputy Speaker of Parliament from 2011 to 2016.
Apart from his political career, Mr. Seah Kian Peng was also the CEO of the retail group NTUC FairPrice. However, in 2021, he resigned from this position.
The politician last spoke in Parliament as chair of the Parliamentary Working Group on the Care of Parents Act. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Singapore Olympic Foundation and has served on the boards of other organisations such as the Singapore Centre for Social Enterprise and Singtel.
By law, any MP can nominate another person or himself for the position of Speaker. If there is only one nominee, that person will be declared Speaker by the Clerk of Parliament. If there is more than one, Parliament will hold a vote. The next session of Singapore's Parliament will be on 2 August.
Previously, on July 17, former Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin submitted his resignation for having an extramarital affair with female MP Cheng Li Hui and making "unparliamentary" statements aimed at opposition Workers' Party MP Jasmus Lim in the Singapore Parliament last April.
