Prime Minister Albanese announced the engagement on social media on February 15.

After a date at an Italian restaurant on Valentine's Day, Mr Albanese proposed to Ms Haydon on the balcony of the Australian prime minister's residence in the capital Canberra.

Ms Haydon, who has worked in the pensions industry for many years, said she was overwhelmed by the congratulations the couple had received.

"I just want to thank everyone for the warm wishes today, from friends to family, from people we don't know," she said in an interview with Sky .

Local media reported that the couple first met at an event in Melbourne in early 2020, and this is the first time an Australian prime minister has become engaged while in office.

Opposition leader Peter Dutton, who has been a fierce critic of Mr Albanese, congratulated the couple in the Australian parliament and said he was looking forward to "our version" of the royal wedding.

"I'll be there throwing roses in front of the prime minister, doing whatever it takes to get an invitation to the gala," Mr Dutton joked.

Cabinet ministers took to social media to congratulate the Australian prime minister. Foreign Minister Penny Wong, who has known Mr Albanese for decades, wrote in a social media post that “love is a beautiful thing”.
