(CLO) US President-elect Donald Trump met with TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew on Monday at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, sending a positive signal to the social network that is at risk of being banned in the US.

During a press conference on Monday, Mr. Trump said his administration would “look into TikTok.” “I have a warm place in my heart for TikTok, because I won the youth category by 34 points,” he said.

“Some people say TikTok had something to do with it,” Trump added. “TikTok had an impact.” While a majority of 18- to 29-year-olds supported Trump’s opponent, Kamala Harris, in the November election, the young vote has shifted significantly in Trump’s favor since the 2020 election.

Mr. Trump only joined TikTok in June of this year, but throughout his campaign, he attracted millions of followers on the platform.

TikTok is currently facing a law passed earlier this year that would ban the app unless its parent company ByteDance sells it by January 19.

In response to the ban, TikTok filed an emergency petition with the US Supreme Court to stay the ban. The US government argued that TikTok should be sold or banned, citing its ties to China.

The law was introduced with the goal of "protecting the national security of the United States from the threat posed by apps controlled by foreign adversaries." However, Mr. Trump opposed the decision this time. In part, he argued that the ban could benefit Facebook, a company he accused of contributing to his defeat in the 2020 election.

Mr Trump's second term as president will not begin on January 20, the day after the law was scheduled to officially take effect.

In a filing with the Supreme Court on Monday, TikTok asked the court to delay the ban to “allow time” for the court to review it and for the incoming administration to “assess the matter.” The filing argued that TikTok is “one of the most important speech platforms” in the United States and that a ban would cause “immediate irreparable harm” to the company and its users.
