The initial cause was determined to be that while moving from Nam Xe commune along National Highway 279 towards Van Ban commune, when reaching Km 40+00 National Highway 279 in Minh Luong commune, Lao Cai province, the vehicle unfortunately encountered a landslide and was buried by rocks and soil.

According to initial information, at around 7:30 a.m. on September 29, Mr. Hoang Van Dinh (born in 1988, residing in Tu Ha village, Nam Xe commune, currently the Manager of Tu Tren - Nam Xe hydropower plant) drove a Nissan Navara pickup truck, license plate 24A-348.02, traveling from Nam Xe commune along National Highway 279 towards Van Ban commune.
Also on the car were Mr. Hoang Duc Giang (born in 1990, residing in Van Ban commune, Lao Cai) and Mr. Phung Van Tuan (born in 1980, residing in Tu Ha village, Nam Xe commune, Lao Cai province).
By around 5pm the same day, the family was unable to contact the three people on the bus. Notably, at the time of the incident, Nam Xe commune and neighboring communes were affected by heavy rain, landslides and floods, making travel on the road extremely dangerous, with many roads cut off. This raised concerns about the safety of the people on the bus, so the authorities were notified to assist in the search.

After 4 days of searching, at about 12:15 on October 2, authorities and local people found the car buried under a large amount of rock and soil.
Although the landslide volume was very large, burying the car and the victims, the police force of the three communes of Van Ban, Minh Luong, Nam Xe, together with the local authorities and a large number of people, still urgently made efforts to search and rescue with the hope that there would be survivors.
However, due to the large amount of rock and soil, search and rescue work encountered many difficulties. The forces had to urgently rescue while ensuring safety.
