For the third consecutive time attending the World Games, Tran Quyet Chien is expected

Mr. Doan Tuan Anh, Head of the Billiards & Snooker Department of the Department of Sports and Physical Training and General Secretary of the Vietnam Billiards Federation (VBSF), said that Tran Quyet Chien is one of two Vietnamese billiards players with a direct ticket to the 2025 World Games taking place in China (from August 7 to 17), alongside Phung Kien Tuong (women's 3-cushion carom).

The World Billiards Federation's nomination to compete in the 2025 World Games is once again a testament to Tran Quyet Chien's high level and stability, demonstrated in the international arena in recent times. Up to now, Tran Quyet Chien is the most successful player in the history of 3-cushion carom billiards in Vietnam. The Ha Tinh native has won 4 World Cup billiards championships, rising to the No. 1 position in the world in 2024. At this time, the 41-year-old player is also the highest-ranked Vietnamese representative on the world billiards rankings, currently in the top 3.

Participating in the 2025 World Games marks the third consecutive time Tran Quyet Chien has participated in this prestigious playground, after the 2017 (in Poland) and 2022 (in the US) congresses. In the previous two tournaments, the number 1 Vietnamese player reached the quarter-finals. With his maturity and clearer desire, Tran Quyet Chien is expected to be able to make a difference. This is an opportunity for Tran Quyet Chien to contribute to the country's flag and at the same time conquer a big goal. "Vietnamese Billiards aims to win a medal at the 2025 World Games," the VBSF General Secretary emphasized.

A boost before the sprint

The 3-cushion carom of the 2025 World Games brings together the world's best players such as Dick Jaspers, Eddy Merckx, Marco Zanetti or Cho Myung-woo... The challenge for Tran Quyet Chien is huge, as the opponents are all extremely formidable. However, these are familiar names at the World Cup billiards stages, where Vietnamese players have fought many times over the years. If he can show all his inherent abilities and mettle, being in the top of the World Games medalists is not too much for Tran Quyet Chien. Besides, this World Sports Festival in China is also a turning point for Tran Quyet Chien, before the world 3-cushion carom billiards season enters the sprint stage. A good performance at the 2025 World Games could be a big boost for him to continue looking for titles in tournaments taking place in the second half of this year.

In 2024, Tran Quyet Chien played explosively and won 2 World Cup billiards championships, respectively in Bogota (Colombia, March) and Veghel (Netherlands, October). But up to this point, after 4 rounds of the 2025 World Cup billiards, the number 1 player in Vietnam has not been able to step onto the highest podium. At the Ankara World Cup billiards tournament held in Türkiye in June, Tran Quyet Chien was very close to winning the 5th championship of his career. However, the player born in 1984 lost in the final match to veteran Belgian player Eddy Merckx. At the Ho Chi Minh City World Cup billiards in May, Tran Quyet Chien also reached the semi-finals but unfortunately lost to the reigning world number 1 from the Netherlands, Dick Jaspers. In the remaining two rounds, Vietnamese players stopped at the round of 16 of the 2025 World Cup Bogota and the round of 32 of the 2025 World Cup Porto.

The opportunity for Tran Quyet Chien is still ahead. After the 2025 World Cup Games, Vietnam's No. 1 player will participate in 4 major tournaments under the World Carom Billiards Federation (UMB) system. Specifically, he will compete in 3 stages of the World Billiards Cup in Belgium, Korea and Egypt. In particular, he will also participate in the World Championship, the most prestigious arena of UMB in Belgium in October. In 2023, Tran Quyet Chien reached the final of the World Championship, but only won the runner-up position after losing to his junior Bao Phuong Vinh.
