According to SCMP , in the context of the Trump administration's efforts to promote a deal for TikTok, China has launched multiple investigations targeting the chip market.
Most notably, an anti-dumping investigation was launched into some US chip lines, with allegations that low-priced imported products have affected domestic businesses.
If implemented, the move could amount to a tariff measure aimed at correcting the competitive balance.
Meanwhile, Chinese regulators are also looking into several major deals in the semiconductor industry. Nvidia, a leading US technology company, has been under investigation in connection with its acquisition of Mellanox (Israel) since 2020, according to AP.
According to Reuters , some Chinese technology corporations have been asked to temporarily stop buying Nvidia's latest chip lines, while Beijing also opened an investigation into US industrial policy, related to incentives from the CHIPS Act for domestic businesses.
Experts say that unlike before when Washington continuously introduced technology restrictions on Beijing, this time China is proactively using available legal and commercial tools to protect its interests.
“The timing of these investigations suggests that China wants to signal that its huge domestic market can also be a source of leverage,” said Paul Triolo, a partner at the consulting firm DGA-Albright Stonebridge Group.
In fact, “old” chips – products above 40 nanometers, which are no longer in the highest technology group – play an important role in many fields such as automobiles, consumer electronics or data centers.
This is also a segment where many Chinese companies have begun to catch up in production. Some experts say that if there are tariffs, US companies risk losing market share in the world's largest chip consumer market.
International analysts assess that at present, everything is still at the investigation stage and depends a lot on the progress of trade negotiations. However, this prospect also shows that the picture of US-China competition in the technology field is entering a new phase, with many unpredictable unknowns.
