Vietnam team plays Nepal at Thong Nhat Stadium?

Due to concerns about the tense situation in Nepal, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has asked Vietnam to host the return match with Nepal next October.

According to the schedule, the Vietnamese team will play the first leg match against Nepal in Group F of the final qualifying round of the 2027 Asian Cup on October 9 at Go Dau Stadium (Thu Dau Mot Ward, Ho Chi Minh City).

Five days later, coach Kim Sang Sik and his team will play the return leg in Kathmandu. This will also be Nepal's first home match in the final qualifying round of the 2027 Asian Cup.

However, it is likely that the Vietnamese team will play both matches at home. The reason is that the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) recently asked the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) if they want to host the return match due to concerns about the current tense situation in Nepal.

"We are negotiating bilaterally on the conditions and will finalize them soon. Because this is beneficial for the Vietnamese team as they do not have to spend effort and travel expenses, and can play at home to serve the audience," a VFF member shared.

Accordingly, the return match with Nepal on October 14 is scheduled to take place at Thong Nhat Stadium (HCMC).

If the deal is finalized, football fans in the South in general and Ho Chi Minh City in particular will have the opportunity to watch and cheer for the Vietnamese team playing at Thong Nhat Stadium again after a 3-year absence.

The last time the Vietnamese team played at Thong Nhat Stadium was the Hung Thinh 2022 International Friendly Tournament, under the leadership of Coach Park Hang Seo. And this time, it was Coach Kim Sang Sik's turn to introduce himself to fans here.

The Vietnamese team is expected to gather on October 4 in Binh Duong to prepare for the first leg match with Nepal.

Victory over weak opponent Nepal in both matches will help coach Kim Sang Sik and his team hope to turn the tables against Malaysia in winning a ticket to the 2027 Asian Cup Finals.

After two matches, the Vietnamese team beat Laos 5-0 and lost to Malaysia 0-4, ranking second in Group F with 3 points. Malaysia is leading the group after two consecutive wins against Nepal 2-0 and Vietnam 4-0. Laos is ranked third with 3 points. Nepal is at the bottom of the group after two consecutive losses.

During the recent FIFA Days training session in September, the Vietnamese team had two internal practice matches, losing 0-4 to Nam Dinh Club and winning 4-3 to Hanoi Police Club.

However, the result is only secondary as acting head coach Dinh Hong Vinh wants to take advantage of the opportunity to evaluate the performance of the key players and the integration level of the new players to prepare for the two matches against Nepal.
