Scientists from University College London (UCL), in collaboration with experts from the University of Cambridge and Imperial College London (UK), looked at the consumption of ultra-processed foods and health outcomes of more than 300,000 people from eight European countries over nearly 11 years. During that time, more than 14,000 people developed type 2 diabetes.

People who eat too many ultra-processed foods have a higher risk of diabetes

Researchers compared foods in groups:

Unprocessed or minimally processed foods, such as eggs, milk, and fruit. Processed foods, such as canned fish, beer, and cheese. Ultra-processed foods, such as salty snacks, processed meats, sweets, etc.

Ultra-processed foods are often loaded with additives, preservatives, and artificial flavors, which often make them unhealthy.

Results found that for every 10% increase in ultra-processed food consumption, the risk of diabetes increased by 17%, according to Everyday Health.

The important role of eggs and fruits in diabetes

Notably, the results suggest that diabetes risk can be significantly reduced by replacing ultra-processed foods with less processed foods.

Specifically, replacing 10% of ultra-processed foods with minimally processed foods like eggs and fruit reduces the risk of diabetes by 14%, according to Everyday Health.

Lead author Dr Samuel Dicken, from University College London, said: “The study found that people who ate a lot of ultra-processed foods had a higher risk of diabetes. The good news is that replacing ultra-processed foods with less processed foods, such as eggs and fruit, reduced the risk of type 2 diabetes.

At the same time, replacing 10% of ultra-processed foods with processed foods, such as fresh cheese, canned fish..., can also reduce the risk of diabetes by 18%.
