On hot days, the Tam Giang-Cau Hai lagoon in Thua Thien Hue province is bustling with visitors. Tourists take a boat ride to welcome the sunrise, visit the floating market in the morning or watch the sunset while immersing themselves in the fresh, peaceful atmosphere of the lagoon. Tourists catch seafood with fishermen and enjoy delicious dishes prepared on the spot, creating interesting experiences...
Ms. Mai Anh in Hai Chau district, Da Nang city shared her feelings: “This is the first time I have come to Tam Giang lagoon. This place is very poetic and beautiful. If you have the opportunity and time, I hope everyone will come here to experience it once.”
Tam Giang-Cau Hai brackish lagoon is more than 52 km2 wide with a diverse ecosystem. In response to the needs of tourists, in recent years, community tourism activities in this lagoon have developed rapidly. Many tourism units organize eco-tourism and lagoon tours. Community tourism models have been born, increasing human resources and improving the quality of services for tourists.
Ms. Luong Thi Hien, tour guide of Tam Giang Community Tourism Service Cooperative, Quang Loi Commune, Quang Dien District said: "By doing tourism, people will reduce fishing in the lagoon. Fish and shrimp have the opportunity to increase in quantity. Normally, people sell fish and shrimp to traders for about 200,000 VND/kg, now processing for customers can cost up to 300,000 VND/kg, bringing in additional income for people. No one created this, people themselves know how to create their own source of profit."
Late March and early April are the peak tourist season in the lagoon. This gives fishermen an additional source of income in addition to their main job of catching seafood. Each fisherman and boatman becomes a “tour guide”.
Mr. Ngo Chien, a boatman in Quang Loi commune, Quang Dien district, said: Ensuring safety for tourists is always a concern. “Before passengers get on the boat, we must ensure their safety. Passengers must wear life jackets to ensure their safety during the entire tour.”
Thua Thien Hue province has a diverse river system, a long coastline and many large brackish lagoons, stretching across many localities with a rich ecosystem. This is a rich tourism resource that Thua Thien Hue province is focusing on exploiting.
Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc, Director of the Department of Tourism of Thua Thien Hue province, commented: “Up to now, Thua Thien Hue province has had many service activities on the river such as dragon boats, fishing experience programs on the lagoon... Compared to the current potential, the quality of waterway tourism services is not diverse and has not been improved. Currently, under the direction of the Provincial People's Committee, the Department of Transport is coordinating with the Department of Tourism and localities to research and have appropriate projects and plans to develop more waterway activities and services."
In addition to heritage tourism, Thua Thien Hue province is aiming to exploit the potential of river, sea and lagoon tourism, develop community eco-tourism, contributing to diversifying, creating brands and unique imprints for tourism products of the ancient capital.
