To conduct this research, the scholars used a commercial drone. As Professor Yi Jianxin, who led this research, mentioned, the model chosen was the DJI Phantom 4 Pro because this drone has radar characteristics similar to the F-22.

In the study, they were able to detect the drone's location by analyzing disturbances in the electromagnetic signals of Starlink satellites. These disturbances occur when DJI's drones pass through them, which offers significant advantages in detecting small and stealthy targets.

The discovery also opens up a future where military researchers could create a very cheap Starlink antenna and use it at bases to track aircraft movements, the researchers said. This would also require custom signal processing software and “an undisclosed high-performance chip.”

The technology that Chinese researchers have come up with is not entirely new. In fact, it was used by Germany during World War II. Moreover, radio enthusiasts can detect moving objects simply by monitoring signal disruptions, a technique known as scattering.

Despite the conclusions revealed by this research, its effectiveness in wartime situations is still questionable. Even if it is possible to detect the position of a fighter jet like the F-22 in flight, being able to fix the weapon at the speed of the aircraft is another challenge. Basically, it will not be easy to detect and shoot down such an aircraft when moving at high speed.
