According to Downdetector, a community-based outage tracker, the incident began around 3 p.m. ET on July 24. Downdetector has recorded 61,000 reports of Starlink-related outages.
In the latest announcement, Starlink said it had fixed the problem and the service returned to normal after more than 2 hours.
On social network X, Mr. Michael Nicolls - vice president of engineering of Starlink - said the problem originated from a failure of important internal software services that operate the core network. However, he did not provide further specific details.
Starlink's vice president apologized for the service disruption and pledged to find the root cause of the problem.
Meanwhile, billionaire Elon Musk, boss of SpaceX, also apologized to users for the Starlink outage and affirmed that he will do his best to prevent it from happening again.
Doug Madory of internet analytics firm Kentik said the outage was global in scope and "very rare" for a system as large as Starlink.
The Starlink network, operated by SpaceX, currently has more than 6 million users in about 140 countries and territories around the world .
