Because of a passenger's 1-word message, the flight had to turn around suddenly.

The flight had to divert and return to the departure airport after a passenger saw a one-word message from the person sitting next to him.

On American Airlines flight 1847 from San Juan, Puerto Rico to Dallas, a passenger saw a text message from the person sitting next to him that read "RIP" (an acronym often used to express condolences after a death) and thought it was a threat to the flight, according to Puerto Rico's Office of Explosives and Public Safety.

So, Flight 1847 took off from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, San Juan, bound for Dallas, but ended up returning to San Juan about 30 minutes after takeoff.

The flight had to return to the departure airport.

Local security agencies have investigated the message as a potential threat. Passengers who received the message have confirmed that their loved ones died the day before, adding that they had to catch a flight home after ending their vacation early.

"American Airlines Flight 1847, with service from San Juan (SJU) to Dallas Fort Worth (DFW), returned to SJU shortly after departure due to a security concern," an American Airlines spokesperson told People.

The flight landed safely at SJU and law enforcement cleared the aircraft to depart again. Safety and security are our top priorities and we apologize to our customers for any inconvenience."

Local security authorities also said that it was a mistake that was handled according to safety protocols. There was no real threat to the flight or passengers.

The flight carrying 193 people then continued its journey and took off at 10:00 a.m. local time on the same day, July 3.
