VNVC announced that it has additional vaccines to prevent 4 diseases: measles, mumps, rubella, and chickenpox.

(Dan Tri) - The new generation vaccine helps prevent four dangerous infectious diseases at the same time including measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox, applying advanced technology to combine disease prevention effects, increase efficiency, save time, and is being deployed for the first injection at VNVC.

The MMRV vaccine is produced by the world's leading pharmaceutical and biological company MSD (USA). To date, the vaccine has been widely deployed in nearly 60 countries with more than 66 million doses safely and effectively. Research since its introduction into the expanded immunization program in the US shows that the MMRV vaccine has helped reduce more than 91 million cases of chickenpox, 238,000 hospitalizations, prevented nearly 2,000 deaths and 1.1 million days of hospitalization.

Compared to the previous 3-in-1 vaccines that only prevented measles, mumps and rubella, the MMRV vaccine has an additional component to prevent chickenpox. Clinical trials have shown that the new generation 4-in-1 vaccine is up to 99% effective in preventing disease after 2 doses, equivalent to injecting each measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox vaccine separately, but reduces the number of injections and saves time, increasing the opportunity to prevent many diseases for children early and better protect adults.

Dr. Bach Thi Chinh, Medical Director of VNVC Vaccination System, said that the MMRV vaccine was developed on a high-tech platform, adding excipients and buffers to stabilize the antigens in the vaccine while ensuring safety and effective immune generation.

The vaccine is indicated for children from 12 months of age (can be vaccinated as early as 9 months) and adults. Women need to complete the vaccination schedule at least one month before pregnancy. The doctor will base on health status, age, vaccination history, ability to coordinate with other vaccines as well as previous diseases to prescribe the appropriate vaccine.

The MMRV vaccine contains a live, attenuated virus that is no longer able to cause disease, helping the immune system to be trained easily and comprehensively. Not only does it stimulate the body to produce specific antibodies to destroy the virus, MMRV also creates memory cells, helping to maintain strong, sustainable immunity, which can even last a lifetime. In particular, in pregnant women, antibodies produced from the previous vaccination are transmitted through the placenta, protecting the baby from birth.

"This is a new step forward in preventive medicine, contributing to increasing vaccine coverage and building strong community immunity," Dr. Chinh assessed.

Ms. Thien Trang took her 4-year-old daughter to get the 4-in-1 vaccine against measles, mumps, rubella, and chickenpox at VNVC on the morning of September 18 (Photo: Moc Thao).

Coming to the VNVC Vaccination Center on the morning of September 18, Ms. Vo Thien Trang (36 years old, HCMC) listened to advice and decided to have her 4-year-old daughter vaccinated with the new generation 4-in-1 vaccine. She said that her daughter goes to kindergarten and has contact with many friends but has no awareness of disease prevention and often shares things with her friends.

“My child was supposed to get two doses of measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox, but this time with the new vaccine, he only needs one dose. This way, he doesn’t have to get vaccinated many times, and it’s more convenient for the family. I think this is a worthy investment,” said Trang.

Measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox are infectious diseases that spread rapidly through the respiratory tract and can leave many serious sequelae.

Studies show that for every three cases of measles, at least one case has complications such as acute diarrhea, otitis media, pneumonia, corneal ulcers. In pregnant women, measles increases the risk of miscarriage, premature birth and low birth weight. The measles virus also causes immunodeficiency, making children susceptible to other pathogens such as influenza, diphtheria, chickenpox, tuberculosis, etc. after recovery.

Meanwhile, about 15% of mumps patients have complications of meningitis, 13% of men have orchitis or epididymitis, 5% of post-pubertal women have oophoritis, directly affecting fertility. The disease also causes rarer complications such as encephalitis, acute pancreatitis, thyroiditis, myocarditis or interstitial nephritis.

Rubella infection in the first 3 months of pregnancy can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth or the baby being born with congenital rubella syndrome with many sequelae such as low birth weight, cataracts, deafness, mental retardation, congenital heart defects, microcephaly...

Chickenpox not only causes skin damage that leaves ugly scars, but can also lead to pneumonia, encephalitis, hepatitis, nephritis or sepsis. Pregnant women infected with chickenpox have an increased risk of fetal malformations, stillbirth or neonatal chickenpox. Infection close to the time of birth can cause the child to contract perinatal chickenpox with a mortality rate of up to 30%.

In 2024 and the first 9 months of 2025, along with the MMRV vaccine, VNVC has continuously introduced nearly 10 types of vaccines to prevent dangerous diseases such as dengue fever vaccine, shingles vaccine, pneumococcal vaccines to prevent 15, 20, 23 strains of pneumococcus causing pneumonia, meningitis and three types of vaccines to prevent meningitis and sepsis.
