Training students to be independent
Ms. Dong Thi Thuan, Principal of Luong The Vinh High School (An Quy Commune, Thanh Phu District, Ben Tre ), said: "The school has just started operating since August 2016. Although there are still many difficulties, we are determined to try to guide students to develop logical experimental thinking through practical learning sessions."
Most of the students' houses are deep in the water coconut forest, some of them live dozens of kilometers away from the main road, every day they have to walk on the banks of the shrimp pond or row a boat to school. Many parents do not have the conditions and time to pick them up and drop them off, so more than 40 students have to stay at the school. Based on the above situation, right from the beginning of the school year, the school decided to implement a safe vegetable growing model right in the school yard. The vegetable garden has an area of about 200 m2, growing many types such as: water spinach, Malabar spinach, green mustard, sprouts...

Ms. Kim Thanh said: “More than 40 boarding students are divided into 4 groups. Each student contributes 50,000 VND to buy seeds and production tools. Through the lessons, I instruct them on care techniques and then let them do it themselves. The harvested vegetables are prioritized for sale to the school canteen for processing to serve students and teachers. However, in the past 3 months, the products have increased in quantity, the school cannot consume all of them so they sell to teachers and parents of other schools.”
Need to replicate the model
Talking about the effectiveness of this safe vegetable model, Ms. Thanh expressed her excitement: “All students love the subject and importantly, they have a firm grasp of the knowledge I impart. We recently met the director of a company specializing in safe vegetable trading in Ho Chi Minh City. This person said that he is willing to buy all the school’s products at a high price, as well as the products that the students grow at home according to the school’s instructions.”
In the classes, the "farmers" with "shares" showed that they were very knowledgeable and understood the "from seed to table" process of organic vegetables.
