According to AFP, WHO declared a state of emergency from August 14 to deal with the increase in cases of the new Clade 1b monkeypox strain in the Democratic Republic of Congo and spread to neighboring countries. This year, the above new monkeypox strains and other strains have been recorded in 80 countries, including 19 countries in Africa.

* In another development, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on November 22 confirmed that it had detected the first case of bird flu in a child in California. This is also the 55th case of bird flu in humans in the US this year and 29 cases recorded in California. As a precaution, the patient's family members were also tested and all results were negative.

California Department of Public Health Director Tomas Aragon stressed that cases of bird flu spreading between individuals are very rare.
