The Guardian newspaper reported on November 7 that the assets of the 10 richest people in the world, most of whom are American technology billionaires, increased to a record high after Donald Trump was re-elected president.
The Bloomberg Billionaires Index estimates the world's 10 richest people increased by nearly $64 billion on November 6, the biggest increase since the index was launched in 2012.
Billionaire Elon Musk, the world's richest person, was the biggest gainer, adding $26.5 billion to his fortune, bringing his total to $290 billion.
By actively supporting Mr. Trump's campaign, billionaire Musk has benefited from the soaring stock price of Tesla - the electric car maker of which he is CEO and owns a 13% stake.
According to the Guardian , much of the increase in the wealth of the top 10 richest people was thanks to the growth of US stocks on November 6, when investors expected a policy of tax cuts and less regulation.
Other beneficiaries included billionaire Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon and the world's second-richest person, who added $7 billion to his nearly $230 billion fortune.
The fortune of Oracle software company Chairman Larry Ellison, a Republican supporter, also increased by nearly $10 billion, reaching $193 billion.
Other members of the world's 10 richest people whose fortunes increased include Bill Gates (co-founder of Microsoft), Steve Ballmer (former CEO of Microsoft), Larry Page and Sergey Brin (co-founders of Google).
Mr. Trump had previously expressed frustration with Google throughout the election campaign and threatened to direct the Justice Department to prosecute Google if he won.
He accused Google of showing negative articles about him but none about his opponent, Kamala Harris. Google denied the allegation.
The only person in the upper class who lost money on November 6 was French luxury goods billionaire Bernard Arnault, whose fortune fell by nearly $3 billion.
The assets of Meta (Facebook) CEO Mark Zuckerberg also decreased slightly by 81 million USD, although his asset value still reached 202 billion USD.
The businessman has angered Mr Trump and threatened to jail him for life over allegations that Mr Zuckerberg conspired against Mr Trump in the 2020 election.
US stocks rose on November 6 as investors bought shares after the election results were clearly in Trump's favor, said Neil Wilson, chief analyst at brokerage firm Finalto.
“It's the prospect of lower taxes, deregulation in many areas like banking, energy and technology, plus a strong recovery due to a clear and uncontested election result,” he said.
