Instructor Jaime Bedrin has 15 years of experience teaching at universities in the states of New York and New Jersey, USA. She has noticed that there are students who adapt very quickly to the university environment, but there are also students who struggle more.
To be able to quickly adapt to university life, new students need to be mentally and physically prepared. The faster they adapt, the better and more meaningful their development will be during their university years.

No "skipping school"
Student life is much freer than in previous levels of education. Many students live far away from their families, which requires them to develop a sense of discipline and self-control.
A seemingly simple thing that can help a student maintain good discipline throughout their college years is to not... "skip class".
Borrowing a friend’s notebook to review the content of a class you missed is not enough to make up for missed knowledge. Students have lost the opportunity to discuss with their classmates in class, or directly ask questions to the lecturer.
There are many reasons why students take time off from school, including health reasons, which seem reasonable and understandable. However, there are students who are tired and have to take time off from school because they have gone out too much, or have exhausted themselves in clubs.
Therefore, it is very important to consider choosing to participate in appropriate activities so as not to affect your studies, so that students can maintain good discipline. Do not be too passionate about entertainment activities, extracurricular activities, to the point that you do not have enough time and energy to do the most important thing: study effectively.
Although students have to read many textbooks and books for their studies, they should not ignore reading for entertainment (Illustration: iStock).
Learn about course outlines and lectures
Taking the time to read the textbook in advance to grasp the course outline as well as the main content of each lesson will help students achieve better learning results, due to prior preparation.
In addition, students need to plan their studies and activities, and set a time to complete assigned assignments. Time management skills to be able to do all the work that needs to be done are very important.
The freedom of student life is the right time for young people to practice the skill of organizing their own lives scientifically and effectively.
For exercises that students have difficulty with because they do not yet understand the knowledge, students can boldly ask questions to the teacher in class. Do not delay the problem until the deadline to submit the assignment... then frantically find a way to solve it.
Learn how to communicate with your instructor
Students need to learn how to communicate effectively with lecturers, especially via email. To get a quick response to emails, students should not forget to use the subject line, to help lecturers quickly grasp the main content of the email. However, students also need to know how to wait for a response, should not be too impatient and constantly contact lecturers.
College years should be a period of training and increasing students' endurance (Illustration: iStock).
Spend time at the library
Although students have to read many textbooks and books for their studies, they should not ignore reading for entertainment. Reading is a very valuable activity for the spiritual life, helping to reduce stress, stabilize emotions, improve psychology...
Get familiar with the library space in the university, borrow books from the library to read to increase knowledge and entertain the mind. Ask the advice of the librarian, they can help you find books that suit your learning and entertainment purposes.
Get used to the challenges
The university years should be a period of training and increasing students' endurance, to prepare them for the difficulties and challenges of adult life later on.
Sign up for classes and clubs that are a little beyond your ability. Try moving to the front of the class if you're used to sitting in the back. Raise your hand in class if you're shy about speaking in front of a group.
These types of experiences are good training for every student, to help them step out of their comfort zone, overcome their limits and develop themselves.
