7 separate entrance exams for 2025, candidates take note

In addition to using high school graduation exam scores for admission, a number of top universities tend to expand their own separate exams in 2025.

Vietnam National University , Hanoi

In 2025, the Hanoi National University's competency assessment exam will consist of 6 sessions, starting from March, with an expected number of 85,000 exams. In terms of location, the exam will take place in many provinces and cities such as Hanoi, Thai Nguyen, Hai Phong, Nam Dinh, Hung Yen, Hai Duong, Thai Binh , Thanh Hoa, Ha Tinh, Da Nang...

The 2025 competency assessment test structure consists of three parts, of which two are compulsory: Mathematics and Data Processing, Literature - Language. The test questions are about 75% multiple choice questions with 4 options and 25% fill-in-the-blank questions.

This is one of the largest private exams in the country. About 90 universities use this test for admission.

Ho Chi Minh City National University

This is the largest exam in the country, with nearly 107,000 candidates participating last year. More than 100 schools use this result for admission. In 2025, Ho Chi Minh City National University will continue to organize the exam with two sessions scheduled on March 30 and June 1 in 25 provinces/cities.

According to the Center for Testing and Assessment of Training Quality of Ho Chi Minh City National University, the structure and content of the 2025 competency assessment test have many similarities with international standardized tests such as SAT (USA), PET (Israel) or GAT (Thailand). The test aims to assess the general capacity of students, helping universities and colleges recruit suitable candidates.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology

In 2025, Hanoi University of Science and Technology plans to organize 3 rounds of thinking assessment exams on weekends, each round will have 3-4 teams at 30 locations. The exam can accommodate about 75,000 test takers, specific information for each round is as follows:

Round 1: Exam date 18-19/1, registration date 1-6/12/2024 (Happened)

Round 2: Exam date 8-9/3, registration date 1-6/2

Round 3: Exam date April 26-27, registration date April 1-6

Compared to last year, in 2025, the TSA exam of Hanoi University of Science and Technology will be reduced by 3 sessions. In addition to the previous exam locations, in 2025, Hanoi University of Science and Technology will open a new exam location to support students in the Northwestern provinces (exam location in Lao Cai province). The test format is multiple choice on computer, the test results will be valid for 2 years to serve the university admissions (depending on the school).

Hanoi National University of Education

This year’s Hanoi National University of Education’s aptitude test will take place on May 17-18. There are 22 universities that plan to use the aptitude test scores of Hanoi National University of Education for admission this year, an increase of 13 schools compared to last year.

The exam is expected to be held at 4 locations, including Hanoi National University of Education, Vinh University, Quy Nhon University and University of Education - Da Nang University.

By taking the Hanoi National University of Education's aptitude test, candidates can register for the following subjects: Math, Literature, English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography and use the test results to apply for admission to regular university training programs according to the requirements of each university.

From 2026, the exam is expected to expand to include subjects such as Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology and Technology.

Hanoi National University of Education 2

2025 is the first year that Hanoi Pedagogical University 2 will organize its own entrance exam and use the results of its own exam for university admission. The school has not yet announced the plan to organize this exam, however, this will be an exam that assesses capacity.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Education

In 2025, the specialized competency assessment exam of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education will continue to be conducted with 6 independent tests: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Literature, English. In which, the Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology exam consists of 40 questions, divided into three parts, instead of 50 questions with two parts as before.

The test content covers about 70-80% of grade 12 knowledge, the rest is grade 10 and 11 curriculum. Candidates can register for one or more exams, depending on their needs and admission combinations. The school plans to organize many exam sessions in Ho Chi Minh City, Long An, Da Nang, Gia Lai. There are 8 other schools using this exam score for admission consideration.

Police and military schools

From 2025, the Ministry of National Defense will organize a separate assessment exam to use the results of the admission to military schools. Candidates will take the exam on a computer. The exam will include comprehensive knowledge of Math, Literature, English, and a combination of Natural Sciences and Social Sciences. Candidates will use the results of the exam to apply to military schools and academies with a quota of about 30% of the total enrollment quota.

In addition, police schools also organize specialized competency assessment exams and use the results of these exams for admission consideration. The competency assessment exam of the Ministry of Public Security includes both multiple-choice and essay sections. The multiple-choice section, in addition to the subject content, also tests logical thinking, judgment skills, and situation handling, in conjunction with the specific training requirements of the police industry. The essay section tests knowledge of two subjects: Mathematics and Literature.
