According to the new regulations, 10th grade students will study 8 compulsory subjects and choose 4 subjects from 9 optional subjects. However, in many high schools, students do not have many real choices, but must follow pre-built subject groups. This situation causes many students to lack information, not understand their own abilities and not determine their future goals, leading to confusion when making decisions.
Three golden criteria for teacher guidance
To solve this problem, Ms. Nguyen Mai Huong - a high school teacher gave advice: "When choosing an elective subject, students need to rely on three core criteria including personal ability, career orientation and favorite university admission combination. Choosing the right subject will create a great advantage in university entrance exam orientation. From 4 elective subjects, students will consider choosing 2 subjects for the high school graduation exam, thereby determining the admission combination suitable for the desired career and university."
Ms. Huong also shared the "secret" to choosing the right subject combination right from grade 10. First, students need to identify the subjects they scored highest on and loved the most in middle school - the foundation for recognizing their strengths and passion for learning.
Next, it is necessary to identify favorite career groups that are suitable for family goals and advantages, helping to have an overall view of the career path.

Finally, it is impossible to ignore the information of university admissions to know which groups of blocks they consider. For example, the medical field often requires the combination of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Information Technology; law and economics may be related to Physics, Economic and Legal Education; architecture and fine arts require Information Technology and Physics.
Besides choosing a combination, Ms. Huong also emphasized the importance of studying all required subjects solidly and evenly, especially Math and Literature, because these are two basic subjects that appear in many university entrance exam combinations.
The school accompanies parents and students
On the school side, counseling work is being promoted to support students and parents. Mr. Nguyen Trung Tin, Principal of Thang Long High School (Hanoi) said that the school has proactively built subject combinations and posted them publicly. In addition, the school also arranged a counseling desk to answer all questions during the admission procedures.
Mr. Tin affirmed that subject selection counseling must be closely linked to students’ abilities and future career orientation. Thanks to good counseling from the beginning, Thang Long High School has not had any students wanting to change subject combinations in recent years.
Similarly, Viet Duc High School (Hanoi) also invited parents to come to the school to hear about the teaching model and instructions on how to choose subject combinations before confirming enrollment.
Ms. Nguyen Boi Quynh, Principal of Viet Duc High School, shared that many students used to "avoid" Natural Science subjects because they thought they were difficult, but that was just a temporary thought without considering their future careers. Therefore, teachers always advise students with Natural Science abilities to boldly choose combinations related to Physics, Chemistry, Biology, combined with Literature, Math, Foreign Languages to create popular university entrance exam combinations such as A01 (Math, Physics, English), B08 (Math, Biology, English), D07 (Math, Chemistry, English)...
Principles to avoid "deviation"
Mr. Vu Khac Ngoc, a Chemistry teacher in Hanoi, warned that choosing the wrong combination can lead to many serious consequences: loss of interest in studying, difficulty in university admission, and even disorientation in choosing a future career.
Therefore, students must build a scientific process to choose a subject group, avoid choosing according to trends or friends. It is necessary to clearly understand one's own abilities and interests - a combination of passion, ability and personality suitable for the career. Next, immediately find out the appropriate career group, connect outstanding abilities and personal interests with potential career groups.
Finally, it is extremely important to consult admission information from universities to grasp the admission combinations of the desired profession.
Once you have enough information, the golden rule is to choose a combination of good subjects and subjects that appear frequently in the admission combinations, and at the same time, subjects that help develop future career skills. Absolutely do not choose a subject just because it is "easy to get points" if it does not serve the admission of the desired major or choose according to friends, because career orientation is a deeply personalized journey.
