The layoffs come after Apple canceled its ambitious self-driving electric car project, called the Apple Car, which the company had been nurturing for many years. The project was said to cost billions of dollars and mobilize a force of hundreds of engineers, but Apple decided to stop due to technical difficulties and challenges in bringing the product to market.
Although Apple did not disclose the exact number of employees affected by the Apple Car project, the number of 614 layoffs shows the significant impact of the cancellation of this project. The positions cut include factory managers, hardware engineers and product design engineers.
The layoffs come as the tech industry faces a number of challenges, including rising inflation, rising interest rates and falling consumer demand. Other major tech companies, including Meta, Netflix and X, have also recently made or are planning to make staff cuts.
It is unclear what Apple plans to do for the laid-off employees, but the company said it will support them in finding new jobs, including providing severance pay and career counseling.
