According to AppleInsider , an 82-year-old man in the UK said that his Christmas gift of an Apple Watch saved his life after being hit by a car.

Accordingly, the accident occurred at a traffic roundabout in Kidderminster, UK, on January 19. Unlike the large roundabouts that are built high, this is just a small roundabout marked with paint at an intersection.

Roundabouts have been shown to make traffic safer for both drivers and pedestrians, but in this case the opposite was true. The driver cut the corner, didn’t even stay in the correct lane, and hit Tony Jauncey as he was crossing the road.

When the accident happened, the new Apple Watch he had been given less than a month earlier detected the fall and immediately contacted emergency services.

According to local media, Mr Jauncey survived the crash with a broken collarbone, cracked ribs and severe bruising. The media also released horrifying CCTV footage of the incident.

"I was walking towards my car parked at Aldi and as I was crossing the road I felt a loud crash," Mr Jauncey said. "The next thing I saw was the front bumper of a car in front of me. Then I was lying on the road and couldn't move."

"The other thing I want to talk about is my Apple Watch," he continued, "The watch detected that I had fallen and asked if I wanted to call the emergency services. I could have cancelled the request by pressing the button on the side, but I ignored it and the phone ended up calling the UK emergency number 999."

Mr Jauncey said the driver stopped to help, and there was also the chance appearance of three nurses passing by the accident site.

Over the years, the Apple Watch's fall and accident detection feature has reportedly saved many lives. The feature was first introduced with the Apple Watch Series 4 in 2018.
