Titian's painting "Respite on the Flight to Egypt"
A famous painting by Italian artist Tiziano Vecellio (also known as Titian) is expected to be auctioned next July.
Christie's stressed that this painting was once coveted by nobles, dukes and emperors, treasured for its colorful scene of family affection in nature.
This work, painted by the master painter Titian in the early 16th century, is one of the masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance.
The painting depicts Jesus, Mary and Joseph resting on their journey to escape to Egypt from King Herod's pursuit.
This painting is quite small in size, only 46.2cm x 62.9cm, compared to the famous later monumental works of the famous painter Titian.
It can be said that "The Rest on the Run to Egypt" has gone through an extraordinary journey.
After passing through the hands of many European aristocrats, this painting was taken by Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte's army during the French occupation of Vienna (Austria) in 1809 and brought to Paris.
By 1815, the painting was returned to Vienna and continued to circulate through private collections before being owned by John Alexander Thynne, Marquess of Bath, in Wiltshire, England, United Kingdom.
In 1995, the work was stolen from the late Lord Thynne's Longleat estate and was lost for seven years. It was later found at a bus station in London by Charles Hill, a lost art expert.
With its special artistic and historical value, "Rest on the Run to Egypt" is expected to attract the attention of international collectors. Christie's auction is expected to take place in London on July 2.
