4 year old boy burned all over his face due to balloon explosion

On the afternoon of December 22, Quang Nam Central General Hospital (located in Nui Thanh District, Quang Nam) announced that it had just treated a 4-year-old patient with burns all over his face due to a balloon exploding with sparks.

The patient is TTS (4 years old, in Ninh Phuoc commune, Nong Son district, Quang Nam).

After many days of monitoring and treatment at the hospital's Trauma Surgery Department, S.'s health has stabilized and he can drink and live almost normally. In addition, the burn wound has stopped draining fluid and has dried.

Previously, on the evening of December 19, the Department of Trauma Surgery, Quang Nam Central General Hospital, received a child patient with severe burns to his entire face, head and neck.

Immediately afterwards, doctors provided emergency care and determined that the child had second-degree dry thermal burns covering 9% of the head, face, and neck due to a domestic accident.

According to family members, on the afternoon of December 19, after school, S. bought a Santa Claus balloon in front of the school gate to bring home to play with.

That same evening, the child took out a lighter (out of gas) to play with, accidentally leaving gas behind and creating a spark that came into contact with a balloon filled with hydrogen gas. The balloon exploded, causing the child to suffer burns to his head, face, and neck.

After the accident, because his face was hot, the child rubbed it with his hands, causing the skin on his face to peel and burn more severely.

Discovering the incident, the family immediately took the child to Quang Nam Central General Hospital for emergency treatment.

Leaders of Quang Nam Central General Hospital recommend that parents, when their children get burned at home, should clean the burn with saline solution, do not let the child rub the burn (because it will dirty the wound and lead to infection), then quickly take the child to the nearest medical facility for timely first aid.
