Diabetic patient self-administered strange drug leading to coma

Fearing Covid-19 infection, the diabetic patient skipped follow-up visits. In particular, the patient arbitrarily stopped taking the doctor's prescription and used a strange drug of unknown origin, leading to coma and severe disease progression.

Today (April 28), Dr. Tran Minh Triet, Department of Endocrinology, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City (HUMH), said: Patient LNH (50 years old, living in Binh Duong ) was diagnosed with diabetes for more than a year.
Recently, because of fear of Covid-19 infection and realizing that he was in a high-risk group due to chronic illness, Mr. H. stopped going for follow-up examinations. Notably, the patient also stopped taking the prescribed medication at the hospital and instead used a drug of unknown origin recommended by a friend.
For nearly a month now, Mr. H. has felt tired, lost weight and been very thirsty.
After having the above symptoms, because he was so afraid of the epidemic, Mr. H. continued to suffer without going to the hospital for examination.
When the symptoms became more severe, his family saw that his health was deteriorating, showing signs of impaired perception, drowsiness, and slow reaction, so they took him to the emergency room at University Medical Center.
Doctors diagnosed the patient with hyperosmolar coma. This is a dangerous, life-threatening acute complication caused by high blood sugar levels.
The patient was then treated at the Intensive Care Unit and the Endocrinology Department of University Medical Center.
After 1 week of treatment, the patient's health gradually recovered and he was discharged from the hospital.
Dr. Triet warns that mistakes in self-care of diabetic patients can lead to many dangerous complications. Therefore, patients should follow the doctor's instructions and directions, proactively equip themselves with knowledge from official sources to achieve treatment goals, and not arbitrarily stop treatment or switch to "word of mouth" treatment methods to avoid making unnecessary mistakes.
University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital organizes an online consultation program: "Healthy at home for diabetic patients"
The program aims to provide knowledge about nutrition, appropriate exercise regimen for diabetics, notes on medication use, etc. At the same time, doctors will share useful information and directly answer questions sent by patients right in the program.
The program will be broadcast live at 2:00 p.m., Monday, May 4, on Fanpage and rebroadcast on Youtube channel of University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, HCMC.
