Accordingly, the two sides agreed that in the 2012 - 2015 period, the city will strive to build at least about 2.7 million square meters of social housing (about 675,000 square meters of floor space each year ).
Specifically, housing for students is 600,000 m2 of floor space, meeting 100,000 accommodation needs; housing for sale, rent, and hire-purchase for low-income people in urban areas is 1.3 million m2 of floor space, meeting 17,500 apartments; and housing for workers is 800,000 m2 of floor space , meeting 93,000 people.
At the same time, the city is also striving to relocate, dismantle and rebuild to replace 25 old, degraded and severely damaged apartment buildings with a total floor area of 350,000 m2 ( about 6,500 apartments).
In case of favorable socio -economic development conditions, the above targets will be adjusted to increase in order to strive to achieve the goal of building 1 million square meters of social housing each year (not including resettlement housing, renovation and reconstruction of old, damaged and degraded apartments) in the city.
Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Le Hoang Quan said that Ho Chi Minh City currently has about 8 million people, of which about 50% of households do not have secure housing. "The housing development strategy not only has social significance but also helps the city become a special, civilized, and modern urban area," Mr. Quan said.
