The first person to bring macadamia trees to Vinh Son was Mr. Dang Van Khanh (K8 village). In 2012, after attending an agricultural extension training course, he boldly bought 700 seedlings to plant on 2 hectares of upland land. At that time, many people were skeptical, but he believed that Vinh Son's year-round cool climate would be suitable for this type of tree. After that, he proved its effectiveness by having a stable income. In particular, after more than 10 years, he has accumulated a lot of experience with this type of tree.
Mr. Khanh shared: “At first, my family encountered many difficulties because no one had experience, and we had to figure out the care techniques ourselves. Thanks to my perseverance, I gradually gained a lot of experience in choosing varieties, planting and caring. Through practice, I believe that macadamia can still become a new direction for Vinh Son people if we invest and apply the right techniques.”

From the initial model, many households in the commune have boldly planted macadamia, including Mr. Nguyen Xuan Tho in K2 village. After many years of searching for suitable crops, in 2019, Mr. Tho decided to plant 150 macadamia trees. Thanks to proper care, the garden has grown well, bringing in an income of about 50 million VND in 2024.
Compared to other plants, Mr. Tho shared: “I used to grow coffee and pepper, but these plants require a lot of care and the prices are unstable. Macadamia trees are more stable. If the productivity can be maintained, I believe this will be a stable source of income, helping Vinh Son people improve their lives.”

Not only Mr. Tho's family, some other households are also expanding the macadamia growing area. Ms. Dinh Thi Hien (also in K2 village) said: "My family planted 400 macadamia trees. At first, I was worried about whether the trees would be suitable for the soil and climate here, but after 4 years of trial planting, seeing the trees grow well and bear fruit regularly, my family felt secure to stick with it for a long time."
Initial results have shown the potential of macadamia trees, but for long-term development, this tree still needs timely guidance and support from local authorities.
Mr. Dinh Cu - Vice Chairman of Vinh Son Commune People's Committee - said: "The initial results of macadamia trees in Vinh Son are very encouraging, showing that this direction has a basis. However, to achieve long-term effectiveness, people need to be trained in more systematic techniques. The important issue is to solve the output, build a chain of links so that the products have a firm foothold in the market."
Faced with the issues, the Vinh Son commune government has given specific directions. Mr. Dinh Cu said: “The locality has identified macadamia as a promising crop that needs to be given due attention for sustainable development. The commune is developing OCOP products from macadamia, aiming to make macadamia a key crop, contributing to helping people escape poverty sustainably.”

From that orientation, the commune has also begun to make long-term preparations. According to Mr. Le Van Thuan - Head of the Economic Department of Vinh Son commune, in the coming time, the locality will encourage people to gradually convert the area of acacia to macadamia. Because the efficiency of acacia is not high, the transportation cost is high, while macadamia has a stable price, few pests and is suitable for the soil.
Besides macadamia, the commune is also reviewing the general planning, in which macadamia and some fruit trees such as durian, orange, lemon, and avocado are identified as the main development directions.
In the long term, Vinh Son aims to develop macadamia on the basis of connecting "4 houses": farmers, scientists , managers and businesses. This is considered a fundamental solution for macadamia to affirm its position, contributing to helping Vinh Son people escape poverty and strive for sustainable development.
