Forbes magazine on January 22 quoted researchers from Security Discovery and CyberNews as saying that the newly discovered data warehouse includes a total of 12 terabytes and is considered a MOAB (mother of all leaks), meaning the largest data leak.

Cybersecurity experts believe the 26 billion data records were likely compiled by a malicious actor or a data broker and left on an open source.

In addition to data from Chinese giants Tencent and Weibo, profiles of users of platforms and services such as X (formerly Twitter), Dropbox, LinkedIn, Adobe, Canva and Telegram were also found in this data warehouse.

What is worrying is that they also found data originating from US government organizations and other countries.

Researchers believe the data dump was compiled from thousands of previous hacks and leaks. The username and password combinations appear side by side, allowing anyone who owns the data dump to access the victims' accounts.

"We should never underestimate what cybercriminals can do with that information," said Jake Moore, global cybersecurity advisor at ESET (Slovakia).

He said victims need to be aware of the consequences of having their access codes stolen and need to immediately implement the necessary security updates to avoid potential consequences.
