According to NBC News, the inauguration of US presidents is a major event and most of the costs come from personal contributions, while the budget covers security.
While it is difficult to estimate the exact cost of an inauguration, public information about private donations is enough to indicate the scale of the event.
President-elect Donald Trump's second inauguration today, January 20, is the most expensive in US history. His team has received contributions of more than 200 million USD for this event.
Notable among the $1 million contributors to Mr. Trump's inauguration are Boeing, Google, Hyundai, Microsoft, Amazon, Uber, Ford, Toyota Motor North America, General Motors, Meta, Delta Airlines, and many other individuals and organizations.
By comparison, incumbent President Joe Biden raised $62 million from billionaires and corporations like Lockheed Martin and Boeing for his 2021 inauguration, which took place with limited crowds due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the storming of the Capitol two weeks earlier.
At his first inauguration in 2017, Mr. Trump also set a record for expenses at that time with an estimated $106 million, of which the largest donation of $5 million belonged to casino tycoon Sheldon Adelson.
In 2013, Barack Obama's second inauguration received about $43 million, while his first inauguration in 2009 received about $53 million.
Previously, former President George W. Bush received a contribution of 40 million USD for his first inauguration in 2001 and 42.3 million USD for his second inauguration in 2005.
For his part, former President Bill Clinton received about $33 million for his second inauguration in 1997. His first inauguration in 1993 received more than $2.5 million in contributions, in addition to $17 million in interest-free loans, paid back with proceeds from souvenir sales and television revenue.
