Việt NamViệt Nam04/11/2024

Currently, Dak Lak is in the transitional season, the weather changes suddenly from hot to cold causing the number of stroke cases to increase, with a high risk of death if not given emergency care and timely treatment.

The Intensive Care and Poison Control Department of the Central Highlands General Hospital has seen a sudden increase in the number of stroke cases these days. According to statistics, in October 2024, the Department received 153 stroke patients for treatment, with the number of cases increasing mainly in the last days of the month, with about 10 cases per day. People hospitalized for stroke treatment are of all ages, but the elderly still make up the majority.

The patient is being treated at the Central Highlands General Hospital.

While taking care of his mother at the Intensive Care and Anti-Poison Department of the Central Highlands General Hospital, Mr. Nguyen Cao Cuong (village 9, Ea Kly commune, Krong Pac district) said that his mother had a history of high blood pressure for many years. About a week ago, after the mother and son talked to each other, his mother went to bed and suddenly fainted. Immediately, the family took her to the district medical facility for first aid, then she was transferred to the Central Highlands General Hospital. Here, the doctors diagnosed that Mrs. Anh had a stroke due to high blood pressure. Mrs. Anh was in a deep coma for more than a day. After being cared for by the doctors, her health has improved. She has been able to eat, walk, hear and talk.

Patient Nguyen Den (born in 1939, residing in village 8, Ea Bar commune, Buon Don district) had a history of stroke about 4 years ago. According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet (patient's daughter), 10 days ago, he had symptoms of vomiting, fatigue, and inability to move his limbs, leading to a coma. His family took him to the Central Highlands General Hospital for emergency care. There, doctors diagnosed him with a stroke. After receiving care, he is now conscious, but his health is still unstable.

According to Specialist II Doctor Huynh Thi Doan Dung - Head of the Intensive Care and Anti-Poison Department, Central Highlands General Hospital, recently due to weather changes, stroke has increased. Many patients have conditions such as: hemiplegia, difficulty speaking, crooked mouth, in some cases cerebral hemorrhage, deep coma, respiratory failure, cardiovascular collapse... very dangerous. Most of the patients have unstable blood pressure leading to stroke.

There are two types of stroke: cerebral infarction and cerebral hemorrhage. If cerebral infarction is detected early within the first 4 hours, the doctor can use thrombolysis for the patient. Patients with cerebral hemorrhage must be treated medically. Special cases will be treated surgically. People with underlying diseases such as high blood pressure, obesity, and metabolic disorders that are not controlled or prevented will have a higher risk of stroke. According to Dr. Dung, stroke treatment is often focused on older patients, but currently the age of stroke is getting younger. Many young patients can also have strokes, some are only over 30 years old. Stroke has very serious consequences. Complications of stroke affect the patient's health and psychology, can lead to temporary or permanent disability, leaving a burden on relatives, family and society.

Therefore, Dr. Dung recommends that to prevent stroke, people need to have a healthy diet, exercise daily, control their weight appropriately, do not smoke; control chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, lipid metabolism disorders, etc. When there are signs of stroke risk, the patient should be taken to the nearest medical facility for examination and timely treatment to avoid complications.
