Speaking at the Congress, the National Assembly Chairman, on behalf of the Politburo , commended and acknowledged the outstanding achievements of the Party Committee, government and people of Can Tho in the past term: economic scale reached 312,621 billion VND; average growth of 7.41%/year; GRDP per capita reached nearly 97 million VND; budget revenue was more than 105,000 billion VND; new rural construction exceeded the plan, the poverty rate was 0.74%. Transport infrastructure, health care, education, social security, national defense and security all made progress, the position of the regional center was gradually affirmed.
However, the National Assembly Chairman also frankly pointed out a number of limitations: Party building and supervision work have not met requirements; economic development has not been commensurate with potential; some targets have not been achieved; administrative reform and public investment disbursement are still slow; infrastructure lacks connectivity; the quality of human resources, especially science and technology human resources, is still limited...
Comrade Tran Thanh Man emphasized that Can Tho has many advantages in terms of transportation, seaports, aviation, river culture and dynamic, friendly people, so the requirements must be higher and more comprehensive. The city needs to have a long-term vision and appropriate steps to make a breakthrough, affirming its central role and driving force for development in the Mekong Delta region, worthy of being a centrally-run city.
The National Assembly Chairman also requested Can Tho to focus on building a clean and strong Party and political system; ensuring solidarity and unity; focusing on personnel work - "the key of the key"; strengthening inspection, supervision, discipline, preventing corruption, waste, and negativity; improving the quality of human resources, maximizing advantages for sustainable and inclusive development.
On behalf of the Can Tho City Party Committee, Secretary of the City Party Committee Le Quang Tung expressed his honor at being entrusted by the Central Government with this important responsibility, affirming that he will promote the tradition of solidarity, lead the city to develop into a modern, civilized, rich, beautiful, and affectionate city, truly becoming the center of the Mekong Delta region.
