Every year the tourism industry needs 40,000 employees, but the number of students trained each year only meets about half of that, of which only 43% are professionally trained. In the new development trend of the tourism industry, the demand for human resources in this field is increasingly high.
The above information was shared in the online TV consultation program "Choosing a future major: Tourism - Service sector" organized by Thanh Nien Newspaper on the afternoon of February 18. The program was broadcast online at: thanhnien.vn, Facebook fanpage, YouTube channel, TikTok Thanh Nien Newspaper.
UNIVERSITIES NO LONGER CONSIDER EARLY ADMISSIONS
In the program, Dr. Vo Thanh Hai, Permanent Deputy Director of Duy Tan University, mentioned the expected adjustments in the university and college admission regulations this year. Firstly, schools using the method of considering transcripts must use the results of the entire 12th grade (in previous years, many universities did not need to use the 2nd semester scores of the 12th grade when considering transcripts). Therefore, candidates need to make every effort to study the best throughout the 12th grade to get the best admission results.

In addition, according to Dr. Hai, universities, although using many admission methods (based on high school graduation exam scores, separate exams, transcript scores, international certificates, etc.), all conduct admission in a common round. Therefore, this year there is no early admission period before the high school graduation exam takes place. Schools have the right to use many methods, but the converted scores of all methods must be converted to one score formula.
In addition, Dr. Hai also noted some adjustments that directly affect the admission of this year's PhD candidates, such as: no limit on the maximum number of subject combinations for each major; priority bonus points do not exceed 10% of the admission score (not including regional and subject priority points according to the admission regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training); the threshold to ensure input quality for the pedagogical and health majors this year remains the same as previous years; the Ministry of Education and Training allows schools to use foreign language certificates for admission, but each school has its own conversion method...
Commenting on these new points, Dr. Hai said: "The adjustments are mainly technical, not much different from previous years. However, with the expected new points of the regulations, the admission methods of universities will have changes. The adjustment of the university admission schedule also has some impact on the psychology of candidates when there is no longer conditional admission before the graduation exam like previous years. Moreover, it is predicted that the competition among candidates when participating in the admission this year will also be greater when there is no longer a quota for each method and there is a common conversion formula between methods."
Master Truong Quang Tri, Deputy Head of Student Affairs Department of Nguyen Tat Thanh University, commented: "The expected changes in the admission regulations will create fairer competition among candidates when there is no longer early admission and the methods are converted according to a common formula. All students need to do is focus on studying to achieve high results in the 12th grade program, review well for the high school graduation exam, and follow the latest admission information from the Ministry of Education and Training and universities."
Before the Ministry of Education and Training's expected adjustment of admission regulations, universities said they would no longer consider early admission. Master Nguyen Vuong Hoai Thao, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Tourism and Hotel Management, University of Economics and Finance, Ho Chi Minh City, informed: "The school does not accept early admission applications but still uses 3 admission methods including: considering high school graduation exam scores, competency assessment exam scores and academic transcript scores".
Similarly, Master Truong Quang Tri said that the school no longer conducts early admissions and uses four methods: considering high school graduation exam scores, considering transcripts, direct admissions and considering scores of separate exams organized by the university. Dr. Vo Thanh Hai also said that, according to the spirit of the draft admission regulations, Duy Tan University does not conduct early admissions and only conducts general admissions for the following methods: considering transcripts, considering scores of separate exams, considering high school graduation exam scores and direct admissions.
Dr. TRUONG THI HONG MINH (Head of Tourism - Hotel - Restaurant Faculty, Hoa Sen University)
What do new tourism trends require of learners?
Dr. Ha Thi Thuy Duong, Head of the Tourism Department of the Faculty of Business Administration, Ho Chi Minh City Open University, said that the tourism industry needs 40,000 employees each year. However, in reality, the number of students trained each year only meets about half of the demand, and only 43% of them are professionally trained. "Along with the quantity, the need for increasingly high-quality human resources is a requirement of society for current training institutions," Dr. Duong added.
Dr. Truong Thi Hong Minh, Head of the Faculty of Tourism - Hotel - Restaurant, Hoa Sen University, also said: "Along with services, tourism industries also have new development trends. Tourism develops according to 3 trends: increasing personalization of experiential tourism, applying technology to enhance convenience and new experiences for tourists, focusing more on personal responsibility in protecting the environment and cultural factors".

According to experts, the new development trend of the tourism and service sector also poses new requirements for human resources. Dr. Ha Thi Thuy Duong believes that having good professional knowledge, good foreign language skills and good information technology will open up wide job opportunities, with a minimum income of about 15 - 20 million VND/month. However, according to Dr. Duong, people working in this field need to constantly update new tourism trends, improve their capacity and professional skills to meet market demand. Tourism is a service, so communication skills are very important, requiring flexibility, sensitivity and good problem-solving skills. Dr. Duong especially emphasizes that foreign language and information technology skills are factors for success for people working in tourism.
Master Nguyen Vuong Hoai Thao also believes that every profession has two sides, advantages and disadvantages. Studying tourism, students will have rich job opportunities; dynamic and not boring working environment; attractive income and good promotion opportunities.
Dr. Truong Thi Hong Minh also said that the growth of the tourism industry in the beginning of this year clearly shows the opportunities for students in this field. According to Dr. Minh, this job will be an opportunity to meet many people and many cultures; an opportunity to develop soft skills. But besides that, the potential difficulties are high seasonality, easy job fluctuations; high work pressure and fierce competition. However, from her own experience, Dr. Minh affirmed: "The most important thing is passion, having passion will help us go to the end of passion even though there are difficulties and obstacles on the way."
Master Truong Quang Tri further emphasized: "If you have enough passion and love, combined with the knowledge and skills you are equipped with - especially foreign language skills, tourism students will be successful in the profession."
Challenging factors for human resources in the tourism and service industry
Master Tang Thong Nhan, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Tourism - Restaurant - Hotel, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, also said: "The growing tourism industry will have many job opportunities and career development. Nowadays, with the change in technology, along with the reduction of many administrative procedures, reducing human effort, but along with that, you must constantly update yourself. If you are just a little negligent, technology will "overtake" you immediately." Besides, according to Master Nhan, climate change and political fluctuations are also objective challenges that can cause fluctuations in the work in this field.
