According to Engadget , in a recently posted announcement, CAC said it found Micron products pose significant security risks to China's critical information infrastructure, including state-owned banks and telecommunications service providers.

Micron becomes the next victim in the war between the US and China

The ban comes after China announced it was reviewing imports of Micron in late March in a move seen at the time as retaliation for sanctions the US has imposed on Chinese chipmakers in recent years.

Idaho-based Micron is the largest memory maker in the US. The Chinese market accounts for about 10% of the company's annual revenue, although the majority of companies importing Micron products into China are manufacturers of equipment for sale elsewhere in the world . In its response, Micron said: "We are evaluating the findings and assessing next steps. We look forward to continuing to engage in discussions with the Chinese authorities."

The CAC also did not say which Micron products would be affected by the ban, nor did it share details about the security concerns about the company's chips.

The ban is the latest development in the escalating semiconductor technology war between the US and China. In recent months, the Biden administration has moved to restrict its rivals’ access to advanced chipmaking equipment. In January, US, Dutch and Japanese officials agreed to tighten export controls on lithography machines from ASML, Nikon and Tokyo Electron.

For its part, China has been trying to find ways to hit back at the US, with Micron being the easiest target as most Chinese companies can turn to suppliers like South Korea's SK Hynix to make up for any shortages left by the ban.
