Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics applies technology to protect copyright of online lectures

On the afternoon of September 18, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics (UEH) announced that it has deployed Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology in its online learning management system. This solution aims to enhance copyright protection of learning materials, limit illegal copying and distribution, and improve data security in the digital environment.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Bui Quang Hung, Deputy Director of UEH, along with the process of universities in Vietnam promoting the application of online learning management systems (LMS) to digitally manage learning materials and expand multi-channel learning experiences, many challenges also arise.

The current situation of illegal downloading, copying and distribution of learning materials erodes intellectual property rights and fairness in access to knowledge. In addition, the risk of leakage of personal data and research of lecturers and students poses an urgent need for security.

“Digital transformation opens up vast learning opportunities for students, but also poses challenges in securing digital learning materials. To solve this problem, UEH has cooperated with 689Cloud, applying DRM to digital rights management to protect the copyright of online lectures in teaching and research. With the companionship of 689Cloud, UEH has both developed an online lecture system and protected the intellectual property of lecturers, in line with the school's sustainable development orientation,” Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Quang Hung informed.

DRM is a technology that controls access to copyrighted materials through encryption and security measures such as preventing unauthorized downloading, copying, and recording; at the same time, authenticating and strictly managing the identity of legal learners. Widely used in e-books, movies, and digital music , DRM has now been adapted to the higher education environment. This technology helps lecturers feel secure in sharing knowledge, while encouraging the expansion of quality online learning resources to serve students at home and abroad.

UEH leaders affirmed that the implementation of DRM is not only a technical solution, but also an important step in UEH's digital transformation strategy, towards a smart, open and sustainable university ecosystem, where learners can access knowledge anytime, anywhere, but still be guaranteed security, fairness and transparency.

According to Mr. Hiro Kataoka, President of 689Cloud Solutions, the deployment of DRM at UEH is the first milestone in applying copyright protection technology to higher education in Vietnam. After the successful operation phase at UEH, 689Cloud plans to continue expanding the solution to many other universities and training institutions, contributing to promoting the comprehensive digital transformation of education.

This is also the first time a university in Vietnam has applied DRM solutions in teaching, to protect copyright of lectures, limit illegal copying and distribution and improve the security of digital learning materials.
