Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner in a dramatic US Open final in the early morning of September 8 (Vietnam time) in New York, thereby helping the Spanish tennis player win his second Grand Slam title on hard court in his career and at the same time take over his opponent's world No. 1 ranking.

In a classy all-around performance, the Spaniard defeated Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. The victory not only prevented Sinner from winning back-to-back titles at Flushing Meadows, but also ended the Italian's 65-week reign at the top of the ATP rankings, returning Alcaraz to the top spot.

The US Open final was the third straight Grand Slam encounter between Sinner and Alcaraz. Except for the second set, when Sinner found his footing and leveled the score, Alcaraz dominated the match. The 22-year-old outscored Sinner with 42 winners to 21 and dropped just nine points on his first serve in a 2-hour, 42-minute performance.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Alcaraz emotionally shared: “Honestly, my team, my family, I am really lucky to have you. The efforts you have made for me to help me improve more and more, not only professionally but also as a person. Every achievement I have achieved is thanks to you, and this achievement is also yours.”

In his speech, Sinner was quick to congratulate Alcaraz, who leads the Tour with seven titles and 61 wins in 2025. The two players have won the last eight majors together.

“You guys are doing great. I know there was a lot of effort behind today's performance, you guys did better than me. Enjoy it. This is a great moment,” Sinner told Alcaraz and his team.

Alcaraz also secured his maiden world No. 1 ranking with his victory at the 2022 US Open, now returning to the top of tennis for the first time since September 2023. He is the second youngest player to win six major men's singles titles in the Open Era after Bjorn Borg.

Sinner, who was on a 27-match winning streak at major hardcourt tournaments before the final, was bidding to become just the seventh man in the Open Era to win three Grand Slam singles titles in the same season. By reaching the final in New York, the Australian Open and Wimbledon champion became the youngest man in the Open Era to reach the final of all four major tournaments in a single season. Sinner also reached the final at Roland Garros, where he won three championship points before losing to Alcaraz in an all-time classic.

However, while Alcaraz found his form from the start at Arthur Ashe Stadium, the Italian struggled to maintain his signature blend of power and precision from the baseline. Alcaraz often dominated the rallies and converted five of his 11 break points to extend his lead to 10-5 in the series against Sinner.

After the final was delayed by about 50 minutes due to security measures in place to welcome US President Donald Trump, Alcaraz quickly took control of his latest match against Sinner. He took control from the start after returning from the opening set, and his play appeared to put pressure on Sinner, who committed an unusually high nine unforced errors in the opening set alone.

Backed into a corner, Sinner found his footing in the final with a series of pinpoint shots in the second set to equalize against Alcaraz. The 24-year-old didn’t make any obvious tactical changes to create that comeback, but a break earned Sinner the victory and leveled the score.

However, losing the first set at the 2025 US Open only seemed to excite Alcaraz more. Sinner was powerless to stop his opponent in the third set, when the Spaniard took a 5-0 lead and finished the set with an overwhelming 11-1 winner.

Sinner continued to struggle to hold serve in the fourth set, and the Italian had to save two break points in the opening game. However, the pressure finally paid off in the fifth game, when Alcaraz broke serve to take the lead to 3-2. That was the turning point for Alcaraz to win the final in four sets.

Not only has Alcaraz secured the No. 1 ranking, he has also taken greater control of the race for the year's number one title. He currently leads Sinner by 2,590 points in the ATP Live Race To Turin. Both players have qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals, the season-ending tournament.
