Getting a good night's sleep is one of the keys to good health and longevity. Yet, many people struggle to get quality sleep.


The good news is that research just published in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy , has found a blanket trick that can actually do wonders for your sleep.

Weighted blankets have long been known to reduce insomnia and improve sleep quality. The heavier weight of the blankets gives the body a warm, hugging feeling as you sleep.

The research, led by Flinders University and the University of Adelaide in Australia, reviewed 18 previous studies that analyzed the effects of sleeping with a weighted blanket, with the largest study including 4,100 participants.

Sleep is a basic human need. Not getting enough sleep can lead to many health problems.

The authors compared the data to conclude that weighted blankets had positive effects, such as on sleep quality and the speed at which people fell asleep.

According to them, this blanket trick has three main benefits: Improving mood, reducing dependence on sleeping pills and improving sleep, according to Science Alert.

The researchers even say the evidence is strong enough for weighted blankets to be officially recommended by medical professionals.

However, it is worth noting that this result is only true for adults. For children, the results are inconsistent.

In occupational therapy, weighted blankets are becoming more popular across a range of ages as an assistive technology, but there are currently no clinical guidelines for their use, says occupational therapist Dr Suzanne Dawson from Flinders University.

The review was undertaken with the aim of developing clinical guidelines for the use of weighted blankets and beginning to formalise some standards for the design of weighted blankets (e.g., weight and materials).

Researchers have concluded that using a weighted blanket is a relatively simple way to improve sleep that most people can try.

Sleep is a basic human need, says Dr. Dawson. Not getting enough sleep can lead to a variety of health problems and increase the risk of or worsen chronic diseases, including heart disease, stroke, and mental health problems.
