Smoke billowed as the temple burned.

Lam Thao District Party Secretary Nguyen Quang Anh said the fire was at the Tam Bao and Thuong Cung houses of the main pagoda, where many ancient statues dating back hundreds of years are kept; the other side rooms of the pagoda were not much affected.

Although the provincial and district authorities arrived promptly, the temple was made of wood and the fire spread quickly and could not be extinguished.

Immediately after discovering the fire, the provincial and local fire fighting forces were present to try to put out the fire. By about 11am, the fire was under control.

For now, the authorities have blocked off the scene, assessed the damage and investigated the cause of the fire.
