Entrance scores to grade 10 in Hanoi unexpectedly decreased

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên01/07/2024

SCHOOLS WITH RECORD DROPPING OF MORE THAN 16 POINTS

The Hanoi Department of Education and Training announced the benchmark scores for grade 10 last night, July 1. Accordingly, many schools have reduced their benchmark scores. In particular, there are schools with strange and shocking reductions. Specifically, Doan Ket - Hai Ba Trung High School, this year's benchmark score has surprisingly decreased to only 23.75 points, last year this school had a benchmark score of 40 (down to 16.25 points).

In 2023, this school was originally a mid-ranked school, but the benchmark score jumped to a level approaching that of the top schools with a score above 40 (in 2022 it was 38.25 points). This caused many students last year to choose their first choice (NV) to enter a top school and their second choice (NV) to enter this school, leading to failure in both choices.

Perhaps that is why this year students and parents tend to "avoid" this school when registering for NV1, leading to the number of NV1 registrations being lower than the assigned enrollment target. Specifically, the school's enrollment target this year is 675, but the number of NV1 registrations is only 551 (the competition ratio is 0.82).

The benchmark scores for entering grade 10 in Hanoi this year have many fluctuations.

Some other middle-ranked schools also saw a significant decrease this year, such as Dong Da High School with a benchmark score of 36.5, down 3 points compared to last year.

Why did many top schools drop by 1 - 2.5 points?

In addition, many top schools this year also reduced their admission scores. Chu Van An High School had the highest admission score of 44 last year, but this year it has dropped to 42.5 points. However, the school still holds the top position in terms of admission scores.

Other prestigious schools such as Kim Lien High School decreased by 2.5 points; Tran Phu High School decreased by 2.25 points; Viet Duc High School decreased by 1.75 points; Phan Dinh Phung High School decreased by 1 point; Pham Hong Thai High School decreased by 3.5 points... Two schools, Cau Giay High School and Tran Phu - Hoan Kiem High School, dropped out of the top 10 this year due to a decrease in the standard score.

Thang Long High School is one of the few top schools this year with an increase in the standard score compared to last year. Specifically, last year the school took 41 points, this year it is 42.25 points. Yen Hoa High School is the school with the highest competition rate this year (1/3), still keeping the same standard score as last year at 42.25 points; Le Quy Don - Ha Dong High School, Nhan Chinh High School also increased slightly by 0.25 points compared to last year. The top schools with the same standard score or slightly increased compared to last year include Nguyen Gia Thieu High School, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School, Xuan Dinh High School..., these schools are all located in the suburban areas of Hanoi.

Explaining the reduction in benchmark scores for her school and other top schools, Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhiep, Principal of Chu Van An High School, said that this year's exam scores were not significantly lower than last year's. However, this year's quota for specialized schools in Hanoi and specialized high schools under the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has increased compared to last year. Many students with good academic performance who register for NV1 at top high schools also register for specialized high schools, so when they pass the specialized school entrance exam, they will not study at non-specialized high schools even if they are accepted.

Many top schools escaped the 3-points-per-subject situation and still passed.

While the top schools and many middle-ranking schools all saw their benchmark scores decrease, many lower-ranking schools recorded significant increases. Among them, Bat Bat High School, which had a benchmark score of only 17 in 2023, increased by 8 points this year, up to 25 points; Tho Xuan High School also increased by 5.25 points...

According to regulations of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, admitted candidates must complete admission confirmation procedures online or directly at the high school from 1:00 p.m. on July 5 to the end of July 7.

Other schools in suburban districts such as Bac Luong Son High School and Luu Hoang High School increased by 3 points (from 17 to 20 points); many schools increased by about 1 - 2 points.

This is also a good sign as it has reduced the situation of only needing 3 points/subject to be admitted to public schools; narrowing the quality gap between inner-city and suburban schools, between top schools and lower-ranked schools.

High schools in the suburban admission area of Gia Lam District and Long Bien District also recorded very little increase or decrease in standard scores, no fluctuation compared to last year and not increasing or decreasing as sharply as schools in the inner city and suburban areas.

SPECIALIZED SCHOOLS REDUCE TITLES, MATH SPECIALIZED SCHOOLS "REIGN THE THRONE"

For specialized high schools, the benchmark scores have decreased in many subjects. Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted has 9/12 classes with lower benchmark scores compared to last year. This is explained by the increase of more than 210 quotas and the decrease in test scores of conditional subjects. The 3 classes with increased benchmark scores of this school are math, IT and chemistry. Of which, math and chemistry classes both increased by 2 points, IT by 1.25 points. The increase in benchmark scores makes the math class of "Ams" School have the highest admission threshold this year, admitted students must achieve an average of nearly 8.5 points/subject.

Nguyen Hue High School for the Gifted also had many classes with reduced benchmark scores for similar reasons. Among them, the Biology class had the biggest drop, nearly 4 points, from 38.5 to 34.75. The remaining classes dropped by about 1-2 points. The Math class also had the highest benchmark score, 39 points, an increase of 2.25 points compared to last year. No class at this school had a score below 34.64 points.

At Chu Van An High School, the math class also saw a sharp increase in its benchmark score, from 37 points in 2023 to 40 points this year. On the contrary, the history class dropped by more than 8 points, from 40.75 to 32.5 points. The English and biology classes dropped by nearly 4 points, while literature and geography dropped by about 2 points compared to last year.

Son Tay High School has the lowest admission score for specialized classes among the four schools under the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, the lowest is 27.75 and the highest is 33.5. The two classes of literature and math have the highest threshold. However, compared to last year, while the math class increased by 3.5 points, the literature class decreased by 1 point. The remaining classes all have below 30 points, the lowest being the history class.

When will the benchmark be lowered?

The Hanoi Department of Education and Training said that on July 10, the Department is expected to meet and approve additional benchmark scores for both specialized and non-specialized high schools (if any).

Students who have enough points to pass the entrance exam need to confirm their admission to the high school they are admitted to. According to the regulations of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, the time to confirm admission online or directly at the high school is from 1:00 p.m. on July 5 to the end of July 7. Students who confirm their admission online on the system need to print their admission confirmation.

From July 3 to 8, secondary schools will receive applications for review of students' exam results (if any). From July 12 to 15, additional admitted students will complete admission procedures. On July 25, the results of the review will be available and then the documents will be processed and the students admitted after the review (if any). This work will end on July 29.
