New developments after martial law in South Korea

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên06/12/2024

Ruling People Power Party (PPP) leader Han Dong-hoon met with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol at the presidential residence on December 6.

According to Yonhap, the meeting also included presidential chief of staff Chung Jin-suk and PPP lawmaker Joo Jin-woo. The PPP leader opposed President Yoon's declaration of martial law on December 3. Han initially opposed the opposition Democratic Party's impeachment effort, but later said Yoon should go, revealing that the leader had ordered the arrest of politicians while enforcing martial law.

After the meeting on December 6, Mr. Han said he did not hear anything that could change his view that President Yoon should give up power quickly.

The National Assembly is expected to vote on the impeachment of President Yoon tonight (December 7). Two-thirds of the total number of members need to agree for the resolution to pass. The South Korean National Assembly has 300 seats, of which the PPP holds 108.

On the same day, December 6, National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik pledged that the National Assembly will do everything within its authority to protect democracy and the people in case the president declares martial law again, according to the Korea Herald.

Also on December 6, Acting Defense Minister Kim Seon-ho said the military would not follow any orders to enforce martial law if Yoon were to declare it again. "Rumors this morning about signs of martial law being declared again are not true. Even if an order is issued, the Defense Ministry and the Joint Chiefs of Staff will never accept it," Kim said.
