New look in highland communes

BAC NINH - With the State's attention, support and investment through many programs and projects, including the "National target program for socio-economic development of ethnic minority and mountainous areas of Son Dong district" (old), in recent years, the traffic infrastructure of the highland communes has been increasingly improved. Thanks to that, the lives of the people here have become less difficult, and the appearance of the highland countryside has changed day by day.

Dream Roads

In the first days of the 2025-2026 school year, Ban Thi Nhung (born in 2014), Dao ethnic group, Thanh Chung village, Tay Yen Tu commune, cycled to school by herself, no longer needing her parents to pick her up. Because the more than 2 km road from her house to the turnoff to Tay Yen Tu spiritual - ecological tourist area has just been paved with concrete. The dangerous sections of road crossing streams have now been replaced by sturdy overflow tunnels with warning mounds for deep water. "Since the new concrete road, I am no longer afraid of being late for school or having to miss school, even when it rains" - Ban Thi Nhung shared.

Listening to his grandson's story with the guests, Mr. Ban Sinh Trinh said that the area where he lives has only 7 households living but has hundreds of hectares of economic forest of nearly 30 other households along with many natural forests. Although very close to Provincial Road 293, in the past, people still had to go by trails. Whenever it rained, the stream water rose, and households could not go to work. When exploiting planted forest wood, the cost of hiring labor to transport it was very expensive. To have a new concrete road to the farthest part of the village, his family and households with forests donated more than 10,000 ^square meters of land to build the road, his family alone donated more than 600 square meters ^of garden land and residential land.

In the period of 2021-2025, the communes of Son Dong district (old) will invest in the construction of more than 30 traffic works, with a total cost of about 1.2 trillion VND. Currently, the Son Dong Construction Investment Project Management Board and the People's Committees of the communes in the area are actively investing in the construction of 5 traffic projects with a total investment of about 440 billion VND.

It is known that the newly built Thanh Chung village road belongs to the "Project for planning and arranging stable on-site population in San, Dan and Dan 3 villages, Huu San commune; Mau residential group, Thanh Chung residential group, Tay Yen Tu town; Dong Rieu village, Dong Ma village, Ban village, Duong Huu commune; Lo village, Le Vien commune; Goc Sau village, Giao Liem commune, Son Dong district" (old). The project is part of the National Target Program for socio-economic development of ethnic minority and mountainous areas of Son Dong district (old) in 2025. The length of the roads in the project is more than 5.6 km, 3.5 m wide or more with 5 spillways and 2 box culverts. The total investment is more than 32 billion VND from the State budget. The road to Thanh Chung village alone is 3.2 km long, with 2 spillways.

Mr. Nguyen The Kien, representative of the construction unit (Dong Do Construction Investment Group) said that the project started construction at the end of October 2024. Thanks to the attention of the locality, the support of the people in donating land and the concentration of high-quality human and material resources, up to now, the unit has completed the construction of routes: Ba Bep and routes 1, 2, 3 of Thanh Chung village (Tay Yen Tu commune). The entire project is expected to be completed in November this year, 1 month ahead of schedule, creating favorable conditions for hundreds of households of ethnic minorities, contributing to promoting the development of forest economy and tourism in the locality.

Create opportunities to break through and rise up

Along with the above project, in the period of 2021-2025, communes in Son Dong district (old) will invest in the construction of more than 30 traffic works with a total cost of about 1.2 trillion VND. Typical works and projects include: Trai Chua village bridge to Khe Tau, Yen Dinh commune (started in November 2023, completed in August 2024); renovation and upgrading of Vinh An - Van Son road (started in September 2023, completed in June 2025); renovation and upgrading of the road from Chung Son village, Le Vien commune (now An Lac) to Dinh village, Son Dong commune (started in December 2023, completed in June 2025). The total investment of these 3 projects is more than 180.6 billion VND. After completion, the projects will contribute to eliminating isolation, promoting trade, and developing the local socio-economy.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phong, Chairman of Yen Dinh Commune People's Committee, acknowledged that since the Trai Chua bridge project was completed, more than 300 households in Khe Tau and Dong Ha villages are no longer isolated and need support every time there is a flood. People do not have to worry about being swept away by floodwaters when passing through Khe Tau culvert, and can confidently expand production and promote forest garden economy.

Although the province and the central government have supported the renovation, upgrading and development of the transport network, 8 highland communes in Son Dong district (old) still need new roads and renovation and upgrading of many old roads. Currently, the Son Dong Construction Investment Project Management Board (under the Bac Ninh Province Traffic and Agricultural Construction Investment Project Management Board No. 1), and the People's Committees of the communes are actively implementing investment projects: Road from An Lac commune to Phien Huong, Van Son commune; Duong Huu commune bypass road; Tay Yen Tu commune belt road from Thac Vot bridge to Son Dong High School No. 3; renovation and upgrading of the road from Cau Cuoi, Son Dong commune to Chung Son village, An Lac commune; upgrading and expanding Khe Tau and Dong Ha roads connecting with Deo Gia commune... The total investment of these projects is about 440 billion VND.

According to Mr. Hoang Van Liem, Director of Son Dong Construction Investment Project Management Board, when completed, these traffic routes will contribute to connecting the region, eliminating isolated areas (when there is rain or flood), expanding the external traffic network. Thereby, in order to complete the traffic planning of the highland communes and the province, creating a complete traffic network, meeting the increasing traffic demand in the area, contributing to promoting the socio-economic development of the communes in the area in particular and Bac Ninh province in general. The projects will create favorable conditions for travel, daily life, ensuring traffic safety for people; at the same time, developing infrastructure, creating conditions to promote socio-economic development, ensuring national defense and security; contributing to the industrialization and modernization of agriculture and rural areas.
