Swap batteries for plants - Small actions, big meaning

In recent days, at 1891 Hung Vuong Street, Gia Cam Ward, Viet Tri City, the activity "Exchanging batteries for trees" has been taking place, attracting the participation and response of many people. This is a meaningful social project carried out by a group of individuals passionate about environmental protection.

The project "Exchange batteries for trees" attracts the attention and response of many people, especially young people.

For a long time, many types of chemical waste such as waste batteries have not been classified and collected thoroughly in the community. Listed in the category of toxic waste, batteries contain many heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, etc. Waste batteries after use that are not properly treated can directly affect human health and become a potential hazard to the environment.

Stemming from the desire to contribute their small actions in raising awareness of environmental protection in the community, a group of individuals passionate about the environment have implemented the project "Exchanging batteries for trees" in Viet Tri city.

Mr. Vu Quoc Thai - a member of the Project shared: “About 10 years ago, an individual in the group happened to read an article about the harmful effects of waste batteries on human health and the environment. We started to learn about and participate in battery collection programs, and at the same time, propagate to relatives and friends. Realizing that recently, there have been a number of units organizing waste battery collection campaigns, but the activities have been intermittent and not maintained regularly. In Viet Tri city, there is no battery exchange point, so we came up with the idea of ​​building this project. Instead of throwing away used batteries, people collect them and bring them here to exchange for trees to help people better understand the harmful effects of waste batteries as well as contribute to forming the habit of handling batteries in a more useful way.”

Young people are excited with the results of changing batteries on their hands.

From the initial idea, the group began to take action. At the battery exchange point, for every 10 batteries of all types, anyone who participates will be able to exchange for 1 succulent plant. Starting operations from January 1, 2025, after just over a week of operation, the group has received hundreds of discarded batteries, exchanging over 300 succulent plants. The collected batteries will be classified and sent to specialized units for processing and recycling according to the correct process.

With a meaningful message, the battery exchange point quickly attracted the attention and response of many people of all ages from adults to students, many children were also brought by their parents to the battery exchange point to participate in this meaningful activity.

Every 10 batteries of all kinds will be exchanged for a lovely succulent plant.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy (Trung Vuong commune, Viet Tri city) shared: “I learned about this activity through friends. Today I brought my daughter to join. I find this a very meaningful activity, not only helping family members form the habit of sorting waste at the source, but also an effective way to educate children about responsibility towards nature and the environment.”

Based on the initial results, the Project team plans to deploy 4 more battery exchange points in the city in the near future and add more types of trees to increase the attractiveness. At the same time, call for support from philanthropists and environmental organizations so that the battery exchange points can operate regularly.

A seemingly small but meaningful act like collecting used batteries in exchange for trees will contribute to protecting the environment and spreading "green" actions in the community.
