Bringing books to ethnic minority students

Việt NamViệt Nam15/04/2024

Improving Vietnamese language proficiency for students, especially primary school students in ethnic minority areas, is the key to helping them master other subjects. Therefore, many practical teaching and learning models have been implemented to help students become more interested in learning Vietnamese. Last weekend, an extremely meaningful and interesting activity was jointly organized by Dong Giang Primary and Secondary School (Ham Thuan Bac) in the school yard, which was "Book Festival and Reading Culture Day".

The program did not start until 7 o'clock, but more than 400 students of this ethnic minority school were present very early to wait for the festival to take place. Every eye followed, then surrounded when the Provincial Library's mobile vehicle stopped in front of the yard.

Seemingly understanding the students' excitement, Mr. Nguyen Minh Dat - Principal of Dong Giang Primary and Secondary School shared: The whole school has 610 students, of which ethnic minority students account for more than 80%. Of which, 400 are primary school students, 210 are secondary school students. Their family life is still difficult, so buying books and stories to read is very rare. Although the school has built a "Green Library" model to help students have more access to books, the number of books is still not rich and attractive. Therefore, receiving additional bookshelves with nearly 1,000 copies in the "Book and Reading Culture Festival" in 2024 will help teachers and students have more materials to read. In particular, the activities of the Mobile Library trip do not simply provide books and stories of all kinds, but also help children access knowledge in many forms, such as accessing the internet, watching and listening on TV, practicing self-study skills, reading, working in groups, playing games, taking emotional intelligence tests through films about firefighters, etc. to improve their knowledge and strengthen their Vietnamese language.

Holding a book for teenagers in her hand, K' Thi Chau - grade 8 excitedly said: At home I don't have books or stories to read, so thanks to activities at school I can read many good books.

Ms. Luong Thi Viet Anh guides students in reading books.

Ms. Luong Thi Viet Anh - homeroom teacher of class 5B, who has 24 years of teaching experience in schools in ethnic minority and mountainous areas, said: Most of the students' parents are busy with economic activities and pay little attention to their children's education. If they have the opportunity to go to the district center or Phan Thiet city, they only buy toys and food without taking their children to the bookstore. While the daily language of communication for the students is the ethnic language, in order to improve their Vietnamese vocabulary and knowledge, teachers in the school always encourage students to read to each other, read during the first class, find supplementary materials for each subject to expand their knowledge and apply what they have learned to real life. In addition, they are required to participate in class and interact with teachers to improve the quality of the lesson, contributing to improving the reading culture of students and teachers.

The image of department leaders and teachers reading books with students in the reading culture festival at Dong Giang Primary and Secondary School is very close and meaningful. Mr. Nguyen Le Thanh - Deputy Director of the Department of Information and Communications said: In the following years, the festival will continue to be prioritized at the grassroots level, in difficult areas, contributing to the donation of knowledge, creating long-term values to develop the reading movement in the community.
