Recognized as a nation, important empowerment

According to AFP news agency, the Palestinian delegation has been given new powers despite not being an official member of the UN General Assembly. Accordingly, it can include Palestinian representatives in the list of speakers at meetings on Middle East issues, propose amendments and make procedural proposals on behalf of a group of countries.

Starting from the 79th session of the General Assembly on September 10, the Palestinian representative has had a seat among the member states.

Accordingly, Palestinian Special Envoy to the UN Riyad Mansour appeared at the opening session of the 79th UN General Assembly on the afternoon of September 10 at a table marked "State of Palestine".

"This is not just a procedural matter. This is a historic moment for us," said Egypt's UN Ambassador Osama Mahmoud Abdelkhalek Mahmoud.

Meanwhile, Israel's Deputy Ambassador to the UN Jonathan Miller opposed the move.

In April, after war broke out in Gaza, the Palestinians renewed their bid for full UN membership. Full membership would require not only a vote by the General Assembly but also a recommendation from the Security Council.

In May, a majority of the General Assembly affirmed that Palestine deserved full membership, but the US blocked this.

However, Palestine will remain an observer state, with no voting rights in General Assembly meetings, and its representatives will not be eligible to run for UN bodies.
