With 299 votes in favor, 207 votes against and 121 abstentions, the European Parliament (EP) rejected the Sustainable Use of Plant Protection Products Regulation (SUR) - a bill proposing to cut the amount of pesticides used in agriculture , approved by the EP's Environment Committee on October 24 after months of intense negotiations.

The bill sets binding targets for a 50% reduction in pesticides by 2030. Pesticides considered the most hazardous are proposed to be reduced by two-thirds compared to 2013-2017.

According to observers, this is a "dark day" for human health and this decision of the EP marks another step backward in the European Union's (EU) efforts to protect the environment across the bloc.

Last week, the European Commission (EC) extended for another 10 years the license to use the controversial weedkiller glyphosate because it can cause cancer in humans and pose a risk to biodiversity.
