Galaxy Z Fold 7 may no longer have an under-screen camera

Under competitive pressure from Apple, Samsung is said to remove the under-screen camera on the Galaxy Z Fold 7 to improve display quality and selfie photography.

According to 9to5Google, the launch date of Samsung's next foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Fold 7, is approaching and the latest series of leaked images of this product has attracted strong attention from the technology world. What surprised the community was the change in the front camera design, when many sources said that Samsung might abandon the under-screen camera technology that impressed the previous generation.

Instead, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is said to return to the traditional "hole-punch" design - a choice that was once very popular on the company's previous flagship models. Although there has been no official confirmation, this decision is said to improve image quality and display, especially when the under-screen camera technology has not really reached the expected perfection.

Over the weekend, renowned leakster Evan Blass shared a new image of the Galaxy Z Fold 7, revealing a never-before-seen close-up view of the device. The photo immediately attracted attention when highlighting the extremely thin body - something Samsung has been trying to improve on its foldable phone line for many years. This is considered a significant step forward in design, signaling a more streamlined and modern Fold generation.

The most striking feature of the image is the thin bezel that has just enough space to fit the power button with the fingerprint sensor. This shows that Samsung has achieved an important achievement in optimizing the thickness of the device without sacrificing the user experience. The exceptional thinness not only makes the device look more premium but also enhances portability – a key factor for foldable phones.

However, not every detail in the design follows the "thinner" trend. From this angle, the rear camera cluster of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 seems to still be quite large, contrary to some previous rumors that Samsung would significantly thin this part. This suggests that the company may be prioritizing retaining camera quality instead of sacrificing hardware to achieve overall thinness.

The most surprising detail in the series of leaks about the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the disappearance of the under-display camera (UDC) on the main screen. Instead, Samsung is said to return to the traditional "hole-punch" selfie camera design, which appeared on the first Fold models.

This change has caused quite a bit of controversy because since the Z Fold 3 was launched in 2021, UDC has been considered a technological breakthrough and has become a signature feature of the Galaxy Z Fold series. Returning to the design of the Z Fold 2 (2020) has made many people doubt Samsung's development direction and product strategy in the next phase.

Đây được cho là bước tiến đáng kể về thiết kế, báo hiệu một thế hệ Fold tinh gọn và hiện đại hơn.
This is considered a significant step forward in design, signaling a more streamlined and modern Fold generation.

One theory is that Samsung may be considering legal action. Rumors have been circulating that Apple is preparing to use UDC technology for its first foldable iPhone, and Samsung may want to avoid patent trouble amid the increasingly fierce competition between the two companies.

The second – and perhaps more practical – reason is image quality. From the Z Fold 3 to the Z Fold 5, Samsung’s under-screen camera technology has never been high quality, often producing blurry, detail-deficient selfies, especially in low light. This has made many users not very interested in this “future feature”.

Going back to the punch-hole camera may be a pragmatic decision by Samsung, aiming to ensure the user experience instead of following an unfinished trend. Despite lacking the “wow” of technology, a clear and stable selfie camera is always an important factor for high-end smartphone users.

Whatever the reason, this change promises to bring a step forward in selfie quality on the Galaxy Z Fold 7's main screen. This could be good news for actual users, when the experience factor is put first instead of technology that is still just for show.
