Fatal blow to livestock industry: African swine fever breaks out again, more than 110,000 pigs are destroyed
Hanoi - As pig prices are plummeting in the North and Central regions, a new risk has emerged, threatening the entire livestock industry: African swine fever (ASF) has broken out strongly. According to a report from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tuyen Quang, since the beginning of July 2025, the epidemic has spread to 116 communes and wards, causing serious damage.
The ASF outbreak has forced authorities to cull more than 112,500 pigs. The disease peaked in late July and early August, posing a huge threat to healthy pigs across the region.
Faced with the emergency, Tuyen Quang province took immediate action. A series of drastic measures were implemented:
41 quarantine checkpoints were established to prevent the spread of the disease.
Mobilized more than 100 veterinary staff directly to the facilities.
Thousands of liters of disinfectants were sprayed over a large area. Although the price of live pigs is falling, many experts still maintain an optimistic view of the market in the near future. They predict that the market can recover strongly in the fourth quarter, especially during the Lunar New Year when demand increases.
However, ASF remains an unpredictable factor that can cause sudden fluctuations in supply and prices. The success in controlling the disease and maintaining biosecurity measures will play a decisive role in helping the pig market stabilize in the final months of the year.
